1675/8 Gold GMT: new to me
Patience eventually pays off. I’ve had my eye out for a suitable gold with brown dial 4 digit GMT but there aren’t many that come up for sale. The ones that do typically have been polished down with loss of the details of the case and various mis-matched parts. No excuses clean pieces seem to be rare.
One of the trusted sellers I’ve done business with before is Andrew Shear. He is highly knowledgeable and forthright on the condition of the pieces I have purchased from him. He contacted me with an original owner piece he had recently acquired from an estate. He said this was an untouched all original example in lightly worn condition with no marks on dial and an unpolished case. It even had a gold Rivet bracelet which is my preferred option for this watch. After we settled on a price I had the watched shipped to Phillip Ridley for service. Phillip confirmed that the watch had never been serviced and that the case and bracelet were both unpolished and in remarkably good condition. He performed a full mechanical service on the watch and sourced a NOS crown and tube for the watch (returning the original parts back to me to keep with the watch). Nothing was done to the case or bracelet. The pictures below were taken by Phillip during the service and show the condition of the piece. The photos are unedited aside from my blurring out the serial number. The chamfers are remarkably crisp, the teeth on the bezel ring are sharp and feel new. The fat font insert has no marks on it. Even the bracelet is tight with little if any stretch and the claps feels tight. This appears to have been a special occasion watch worn infrequently over its 40+ years. Going forward I will continue to keep this as a special occasion watch and make sure that it gets the wrist time it deserves while being careful to maintain its current condition. I wear all of my watches in rotation as it doesn’t sit well with me to make something a seldom seen safe queen. My thanks to Andrew Shear for another great transaction. He has earned my trust as an expert resource and source for hard to find pieces. My thanks also go to Phillip Ridley for his speedy 2 week turn around on this watch. He has worked on over 10 vintage pieces for me and has become a trusted resource for verification of authenticity and condition of the pieces that I purchase. It gives me piece of mind to have my watches independently evaluated. Also, most are well behind on their service schedule so it works out well to have a full service performed by Phillip once he has verified the piece. Phillip recently opened his own independent service center separate from his father with the following web address: https://ridleywatchmakers.com. He has helped me to source difficult to find bracelets, bezels, crowns, etc for the watches he was worked on for me |

Congratulations. That is a beautiful piece. You are right in regards to almost all the ones that pop up have been polished to death. They are great looking in person. I down the road would love to acquire one. Again congratulations.

What a beautiful pick up! Congratulations on the YG 1675! What a fantastic example.
I've corresponded with Andrew Shear before. Very nice to deal with, although I have yet to purchase anything from him. His inventory always seem to be in great condition. Good to hear that Phillip did such good work for you and turned it around so quickly for you too. The photos speak for themselves. |
