Opinions please on this Lange & Sohne
Its a Grand Lange 1 in W/G with the luminous dial. It is now a discontinued model. The 3rd photo is of a Lange 1 which is the same watch, but is only 39mm compared to the Grand Lange which is 41mm I would also appreciate very much your thoughts on the comparisons between Lange & Sohne and Patek Philippe. Many thanks.

Lange do awesome watches but unfortunately not in steel.
Why not take a look at Glashütte Original? In my opinion they aren´t bad either. Jocke

Lange is a beautiful watch. The Platinum datograph is the one to catch.

not a fan of that dial config: prefer centralized hour, minute, and second hands. i do know they are highly regarded in haute horologie circles.

It looks unique, which is cool. There's one that comes with a white or grey dial that looks pretty good too.

Had that watch on this summer. Lots of drool and my heart skipped some beats, it is that good.

I would prefer the 39mm if it came down to it. The Grande Lange's power reserve needle intersects with the time subdial at 3 o'clock and such a feature would drive me insane. It's quite incomprehensible to me, but that's how it looks.
Patek doesn't alway win either when it comes to the looks front. Both are venerable houses with Lange having been revived recently. If one is optimistic, it would be a good time to get a Lange at the moment and see where it ends up in 20 years time. From a horological standpoint, the brands themselves, PP and Lange, are the inheritors of different traditions and some might say, defenders of their respective traditions. PP owners are often Lange owners too and vice versa. Very similar values. but not always producing winners, but then again, who does? |

They are simply great watches to me. I'm not a big fan of the Grand Lange proportions but there is no dispute about the quality in my mind. So much of the high-end watch industry is image and in that regard PP and VC maintain an edge based on lineage, but to me Lange is hard to beat.
I only have one, but I like it: |

That is a nice watch. Is it hard to read or just the matter of getting used to?

If you were asking me, it's quite easy to read. The contrast is enough and while smaller than normal, is well designed. The Lange One, was a hit in 1994 when released and has stayed that way. They got it right. I allowed myself the MP complication as it resides entirely within the small seconds dial and adds rather than subtracts from the presentation in my view.

Superb Matt.
From your pic, I am led to believe that JLC took a leaf or two out of the Lange' design book when it came to the subdials of the Duometre a Chronographe. |

Kind of silly to spend that much money to time the steak, even though the datograph is widely considered the best chrono movement in the world.
I think the platinum Langematik Perpetual is the way to go, maybe the rose gold on leather if on a budget. |

The Lange one is beautiful no doubt and Lange is among the top of the most revered swiss brands, but there are just somethings in Lange 1 design that put me off from the first pic...as in the empty left date disc is very unsymmetric to design, but then everything in the dial is unsymmetric...Lange makes great watches and Lange 1 with MP is rather more proportioned, IMVHO :)
Other Lange models, like Datograph and Perpetual mentioned above are among the absolute greatest watches so, just my opinion, go for one of those models, but if a Lange 1, go for Moon Phase :) |

Thank you to everybody who made a comment about the Grand Lange 1.
Especially Lee & Matt. You have now given me something to think about. Your advice on another Lange - 1815 Chronograph, thread that I have placed onto the forum, would be much appreciated.

Swiss owned, but German in heritage and tradition. Not actually considered a Swiss brand.
