Car Talk: Bought a new car for my wife
Some good news, a slight disappointment, and the agonizing wait for delivery!
Automobiles are my biggest material passion ever since I was able to read. Reading time during elementary school was always an MT, R&T, or C&D and my friends would always go to the back page where the tester specs were listed of all cars tested, and test me on prices to 0-60 and top speed stats. My wife and I recently moved out of NYC which led us to the exciting yet frustrating process of buying another vehicle for my wife. I took this as an opportunity to look at high performance crossovers. I justified the performance variants by telling her it's safer to have that extra torque of the 6Ts over the 4s. Upon various test drives of different models, she noted "this one doesn't pop as much, I like the pops!" *Pat myself on the back* The contenders were the GLC43, Macan GTS, X3 M40i, and SQ5. My personal top choice was the GTS, and the GLC43/M40i rounding out second place. At the end of the day my wife did not like the dated interior of the GTS. We decided on the GLC43 as that was the best deal we struck up on a 2019 build slot. I am not a big "off the floor" Merc guy because of depreciation but it is what my wife wanted and when the baby seat goes in, depreciation doesn't matter! My wife put the build together(with some assistance options I wouldn't necessarily buy myself, but it's her car), and I added the new beefier AMG steering wheel and the performance exhaust option. I love Merc's dinamica(alcantara) inserts but "it's too racy" according to my wife So long story short, here I am counting down the months until scheduled delivery and all I hear in my mind is the crackles and pops of the exhaust between shifts and letting off the throttle. I'm just as excited as she is, and she sends me IG posts of the car and color combo we ordered, as I look at lowering links, ceramic coatings, and hoping a JB4 comes out for it. |

Congrats and great choice. I drove all your contenders last year when I was shopping. Fun segment and fun "cars" to drive. The AMG 43's are a nice streetable version and great all around performers.

Nice car! I definitely have a soft spot for the Macan, however.

I need to drive the GLC43. I've driven the Macan Turbo and was extremely impressed by that car but I've heard a lot of great things about the GLC43 too.
I'm not really in the market for a new car right now but the Macan Turbo is a real contender when that time comes. Congrats on the new sled! |

Congrats! Agree about Mercedes and BMW, bravo! Besides, the Porsche is sooo 8 years ago popular plus disdain the VW Group's bad treatment of their customers... even if you have two Bentleys.

I hope the wait is smooth and easy. Btw, the GTS was the best move I’ve made in terms of cars. It is a pure dream to drive. Is endless fun and brings a smile every time I think about it. I hope the same experience for you.

She drives the C43 sedan. It’s a really fun awesome car. And she absolutely loves it.

Awesome cars you were looking at, your wife will enjoy her choice I am sure. Can't wait to see pics when it comes in. Were you not interested in a European Delivery option?

Nice choice.
I drive a 2014 Q5 TDI and love it but not the redesigned Q5 so much. I would definitely buy the MB myslef among the three choices. My wife is waiting for the 2020 GLS redesign now. I agree with you that I would ideally prefer for one a couple of years old to avoid the depreciation hit but i fear she will be in need of a new ride by then. BTW, when I last had my Audi serviced at my local German Specialty Shop, I asked the owner what they drive, given that they work on Porsche, BMW, MB and Audi. He simply pointed to the side lot with a row of 5 MBs. Enjoy the wait, it will be worth it.

If you haven’t already, make sure you sign up for the AMG Private Lounge when you get the VIN

SD, I made a comment about the nature of depreciation of AMGs when you were looking. Tongue in cheek but still out of line and I’m sorry for being a DB with the unwarranted comment. Faz, one of these days I will do a Euro delivery but it’ll have to be the right car RTR, I’ve been on AMG Lounge for a while but haven’t check in lately. That board just seems dead! Thank you all for the kind words. I will definitely post a couple of pics when it arrives. Scheduled build starts 7/2 and should be ready for pick up by early September. As far as lucky wife, I’m the lucky one as she let me take her down the fun path rather than the ordinary. It’s funny when my father-in-law asked her what she decided on and she goes, “A GLC43 AMG. It’s not a true AMG because those engines are built by one person. But it has a V6 twin turbo and sounds like a machine gun when it shifts gears. It’s so cool!” So I guess she was paying attention and not just nodding her head at my many rants about cars. Similar to my Rolex rants, but when I asked her which one she wants, she says “Datejust 31 with a fluted bezel, jubilee band, MOP dial with diamond markers” without hesitation. |

Minus the BMW those are exactly the three cars I'm looking at for my wife as well. I'm not going to be pulling the trigger until the 2020 model though and I hope maybe the Porsche will update the Macan a before that time.
My wife likes acceleration I do love her so. LOL |

The 2020 is getting a refresh on the GLC43 with fully digital dash. I know that the Macan has a redesign wearing camo being road tested as well but unsure if it’s slated for 2020 or 2021. You may have the X3M released by the time you’re looking, but I don’t know if that’ll change your mind on BMW.
