233 Dot vs Am/PM but there is a catch

Afternoon all, I have a dilemma.

I can get a 2016 Am/Pm 233, excellent condition complete set for 7k or
a 2008 I Dot dial, nicks on case and crown... serviced in 2008 to fix the tooth issue for 6k all in. I don't know which way to go... help :)

I prefer AM/PM, so I would get that. New and nicer.

Traditionalists want the early dot, but that's heard mentality IMO (don't flame me).

Crown guard has good dent in it and scratches throughout.

I have the dot dial as I found it nicer plus it's cheaper, easy decision in my opinion.

Dot.

That crown guard can be swapped out if it concerns you, the dot dial can't.

I'm firmly in the dot camp -

But I think I might hold out for a better example than you have on the hook.

The scratches aren't a bother however the gouge is. It is on the back side maybe no big deal. I don't think a new guard is that much.

I prefer the dot dial but condition trumps everything. Hold out for one in better condition if it's what you really want.

This. But I believe someone said that their dot dial was swapped for am/pm dial when they serviced their watch recently. Which would totally suck if it’s true cause I also have a dot dial and don’t want to change the dial...

Yeah, I thought I heard that Panerai is gonna swap dot for AM/PM at service, so buying a 233 in iffy condition just to get a dot dial is probably a risk. If the watch is that old, and that well used, then there's a good chance it should be serviced now or really soon. Will Panerai give you the option to keep that dial when servicing your watch?

The Dot Dial is number 9 of the very first series! If the dial has been changed to take care of the power reserve issue (it could get stuck on the first series), so much the better. Full-set; Bingo!!!

There is paperwork showing it was changed in 2008.

If that’s true, it will seriously hurt the premium for the dot (if there still is such a premium - I haven’t checked in awhile).

I have a 2009 (K series) with dot dial and have no issues with the PR tooth sticking - I understand that this was a problem with earlier versions (I,J) and this was overcome by increasing the size of the aperture where tooth travels. My watch has been rarely used but was planning on sending to Panerai for a service in the coming weeks (after everything hopefully returns to some sort of normality with Covid-19). I was unaware of the dial change until mentioned here. Does anyone know whether you are asked for your consent before they change the dial or is it done automatically?

In my opinion the dot dial is visually far superior to the am/pm dial and would not want it changed.

There was a thread here a while back. A member had the PR problem and was told by Panerai that there is no fix for the dot dial, and if he wants it fixed they'll swap if for an am/pm.

He had the option, if I remember correctly.

Both in hand
2006 Doesn’t have the clutch slip the 2017 has, so it just keeps winding and winding .
The tooth is different look on both models, the charge indicator
Also writing is different on the back

What's the time keeping like on the dot dial? That's a good whack on the crown protector.

Was the service pre or post drop?

Post service , however dial was never swapped and it appears to have the stuck fang issue. Also found a post where Panerai does swap the dials to am/pm.
No idea on time keeping will check in the am.
