Father in-law's watch - Real and/or model?

Howdy - First time post and yes, what I am asking appears to be the same ole story....but this is actually true - Father in-law passed and this is/was his watch. I've been a Rolex Forum lurker for some time and even have a Explorer II from back in 2001, but don't know what this one is or even if real. I know I can take it to an AD but with COVID and an attempt to avoid embarrassment presenting a fake, I thought I would start here. Appreciate the feedback.

More pictures of the bracelet. The pro will be much more help, but it looks nice to me.

Thanks for your feedback. Good pictures are harder than one would think to take. Guess I'll take to an AD to get it cleaned up. Not my favorite model but I need to do something other than put it in a drawer.

I would contact LAWW or Rolliworks instead and ask if they can make something out of it. Your AD will not be able to do this

This watch may be worth taking to Bob Ridley at Watchmakers International in the Dallas area.

Great guy to talk to, and somebody who can tell you all about your watch, and what you should and should not do with it.

Taking it to an AD is definitely not something that you should do.

That top left case lug is a shame... rolliworks can fix it as long as you are okay with the restoration process and price... it can end up a very nice vintage GMT... definitely not too far gone...

That top left lug looks melted. I've seen some pics from LAWW where they weld on steel and then reshape it back to the correct dimensions.

Not sure if that would be something you'd be interested in. Personally, I think if the watch is in wearable condition and the lug isn't compromised, then keep it as is. Your father in law was a bit rough on it for sure, but that's the life it lived. The patina on the dial is very nice as well.

This here, Bob knows his vintage watches.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I am going to reach out to Watchmakers International here in North Texas next week. Hopefully I can get it back in good shape. --Thanks again!

Looks real enough to me, it's clearly been loved and would need refurbished, or just wear it as is, the beat up look gives it a lot of character, would look great on a vintage leather strap.
