41mm no date Sub swap for 14060M

I traded my much loved 14060M to part fund 16610LV back in July last year. I thought that getting the new 41mm ref 124060 Sub would stop me missing the 14060M. Well it hasn't and I've been actively looking for another 2 liner 14060M for a while. I'm happy that they have increased in value but find it painful to part with over £8k for decent full set piece.

So today the search has ended and I have found a pretty minty full set Y serial 14060M that I will do a straight swap for with my 2 month old 41mm 124060. I'm sure some of you will say I'm mad but I figured if I ever wanted another one of those new Subs, I can fairly easily get one from my AD.

I'll post some pics as soon as the deal is done.

If makes you happy that’s all that matters, I opted for a 114060 over the new 41 myself

A 2 liner is hard to beat. Nice move.

41mm no date Sub swap for 14060M

I share your fondness for the 14060M. A number of years ago, I decided I’d finally buy a Submariner...which captured my eye as a boy, thanks to Roger Moore in 1973’s “Live and Let Die”.

I knew nothing of references at the time. I knew there was a model with the date and one without. I had a slight preference for the date-less version, its clean dial. No cyclops to get in the way of that uncluttered look. If Roger’s Bond didn’t need a date complication, neither did I.

It was less expensive, too!

However, when I visited the AD, the only model they had in stock was the Submariner Date. I was ready to buy and thought, “What the hell. It’s a useful feature. Probably more popular, if I ever need to sell.” I bought that 16610 and have been very pleased to own it.

Oddly, though, every time I passed a shop that had a 14060M, it caught my eye. Then, they discontinued the 16610 in favor of the ceramic successor. The 14060M was still in production and I finally said, “What the hell. I’m going to buy it.” I justified the purchase by embracing that most useful of rationalizations:

I’m a collector!

I kept the 16610, you see, because, what the hell, two Subs are better then one. They are different, after all, aren’t they? And, maybe my daughter will one day want one of them. Or, her husband, someday.

I’m shocked at how the prices have risen on these discontinued models. But, they are great watches and capture the essence of the brand. If push came to shove, I’d hang onto the 14060M over the 16610. So, my daughter had better be okay with the date complication.

Anyway, the point of the story is when you fancy one particular watch, it’s the only one that will do. It’s purely subjective and more rooted in an emotional response than a logical one. In my experience, the most satisfying purchases, in the long term, are those that are emotionally satisfying. I can think of all the logical uses of that date complication (here, substitute all the good attributes of your new Submariner) but that 14060M is just right, for me.

If the 14060M is just right for you, than nothing else will do. Make the trade and enjoy.

A perfectly sensible choice, frankly. They’ll keep spitting out the new ones. Getting a great quality 5-digit is hard and getting harder.

Congrats. I much prefer the 5 digit Sub over any of the 6 digit variants.

Sometimes you have to let a watch go to fully realize how much you love it. I’ve found satisfaction with a watch has more to do with the heart than the head!

This, and very well said.

Last year, I got rid of a very highly coveted watch (SS SkyDweller) and bought a sub. Some TRFers were aghast, asking how could I possibly make such a decision. My SD was awesome, but it just was not me. That’s the long story in a short version. So you wear what watch makes you the happiest, done.

I've bought and sold numerous references throughout the years and never felt the urge to buy another, but there's something about the 14060M, I just couldn't stop thinking about it.

Actually there is another watch I wish I never sold, Sinn EZM1. Maybe one day.

I have both a 114060 and a vintage 14060. Wouldn’t part with either. Each a bit different and wear different.

Completely see where you're coming from.

I almost bought a 14060m last year but instead got a new 124060 from my AD thinking I was sorted. Now I find myself in he same boat - really like the 41mm but still find myself wanting a pre-ceramic no date. Hopefully later this year...

I have 114060 and 14060m and love them both. If I had to choose just one it would be the 14060m.

I think this was a good move...you've only actually paid the same price as your 6 digit for a 8k watch....result....and to be honest the new ones are well over rated

My first Rolex. Don’t wear it that much anymore but would never get rid of it!

The 14060M is a terrific watch (last of the lug hole 5 digit models), but that doesn't mean you should ignore the large price delta between a 124060 and the 14060M, which you can pick up (full unpolished set) at a far lower price. I would sell the 124060 for market price and then source a beautiful 14060M, saving you thousands of dollars.
