Looking forward to hearing the real story! I hope it is legit--that would be great. I can't say I have ever seen an Ebay item garner so much attention on the forums. I also hope we find out it was one of our own -that would be even better! I would love to be dead wrong on this-even though my gut would have failed me!!

Yeah... now the real interesting part begins... I wanna know if it's legit!!

Ken you never saw the ebay milisub auction? It was more hyped up than this one as someone from VRF drove to the guys house to verify/validate... there was no doubt it was 100% legit!!

I am happy for everyone in this transaction. I do have to say how many 90 somthings do you know that type such great responses and use the internet as well as Bob does. I am refering to the seller. I am just a little shocked in many ways.

Now nobody get the wrong idea. I am not saying older people do not use the internet but when your in the 90's like Bob is your lucky to first of all to be alive as I think it is fair the say most men do not go that far in age and second to be able to read and fully understand what is going on around you such as what people are saying to you or asking you. Look at how sharpe his responses are. It is a little fishy.

Sunny--I did hear that--I read the guy drove to his house--which is the only way I would have bid on this. Two of our vintage friends passed on it-they didn't buy story--but a few other well known ones did-we shall see. I usually go with my gut--but I hope my gut is wrong!! We will find out-as there is no way this one stays quiet in the vintage watch world!!

He's a well educated man in his 80's. I don't have trouble believing that that he can operate a simple computer and eBay transaction at all... he's been doing it on eBay for 11 years.

I read the questions on his auction and he mentions a son.

Good point I did not think of that. Sombody should have typed a question to the seller asking if sombody was speaking on his behalf. Ha ha would the real Bob please stand up.

I thought he said he was in his 9th decade? Anything over 92 it would not matter how smart he may be. Everything declines real fast in Men if they make it that far. Avarage life span of a male is 77.

Direct quote from the q&a section:

A: Wait a minute. The ninth decade is where I am. Count up:birth to age 10 = First decade; 10-20 = 2d decade; 20-30 = 3d decade.........80-90 = 9th decade. I'm 81, not 90, and I still feel like I'm right in the center of my life.

My dad is also 81 and uses the computer daily. He just emailed his Christmas list to me.

Yes, surprised so many think an 81 year old couldn't possibly operate a computer.

Pete,
He is in his 9th decade which puts him in his 80's actually he is 81. The seller is a retired neurosurgeon, i would expect he has a little more than the average amount of sense.
I looked at this story just like everyone else did, impressed with the guy, not so impressed with some of the inconsistencies. However having worked with surgeons for the past 35 years, keeping their patients alive for them, I can see where he is coming from. Another thing, this guy isn't a watch fanatic. He is just like a whole lot of others who look at a watch as a mechanical instrument to let you know the time of day. this watch was probably regarded just the same as the surgical instruments he used, just a tool. He bought a watch that was worth 70.00 USD at the time of purchase. He had no earthly idea that it was worth 66k. How would he know? I suppose if he was really curious as to the value, he could have driven to Dallas and taken it to the RSC there. Perhaps they would give him a general idea as to what it was worth. Figuring that it was probably worth 50-100 bucks, wasn't worth the trip.

I can envision this fellow, probably getting ready to move out of a big house in the country to something smaller, confronted with a house and storage areas full of the accumulation of many years in the same place. He sold a bunch of really nice Deep sea reels and some rods, so he must have been a pretty avid fisherman as well, All this is pretty overwelming, and if you're trying to get rid of a whole lot of "Stuff", you probably aren't going to spend a lot of time on any one piece.

The auction is over, and hopefully it will turn out well for all concerned. He will get his money, and the buyer will get a really nice watch with a great "Story". As someone said on another forum, it's not over til the money changes hands. the buyer still has the right to walk away if it's not as described.I feel sure that whomever the winning bidder is will give it a very thorough going over before the money is deposited in the good Dr's account.

If I were him, I'd take 7k out of the 66k take on the old sub to buy a new sub to serve him out his years. What a wonderful way to upgrade!

I think most would agree a new Sub is a significant downgrade.

To a diehard collector it would be but to someone that bought a tool watch back then, and wouldn't mind another bulletproof tool watch now, it'd be a big upgrade. This guy didn't buy it because James Bond had one, or because they're sought after, just because he wanted a watch that was tough.

I am still in awe of how many people actually believe this story on TRF. Hmmmm interesting to me. I believe it is 100% garbage--it sounded like a novel though--great story--old man finds treasure and makes $66k--wonderful novel. I guess until I hear from the buyer and read a follow up story--it is nothing more than fiction to me!!! Just my take--sorry to all those who believe--and I hope I am proved wrong!!

I completely agree. A 90 year old listing on ebay? Not likely. Maybe a relative helping him post? Sure. But they would have been able to research it's value just a little bit. I'm very suspicious.

It reads everywhere that he is 81 years old.

OK, got me on that one! I skimmed it quickly and "ninth decade" stuck in my head. Yes, an 81 year old would be in his ninth decade. Got it.

Still, 81 years old and posting your Rolex on ebay? Still unlikely, but more possible than a 91 y/o.
