Just ruined a 1963 meters first 5512 gilt dial :(

I can't believe what I just did. I have (had) a 1963 meters first 5512 gilt dial. It was in perfect condition as well. It had been taken off by the original owner and kept in the box untouched for 50 or so years. Perfect dial with a nice orange patina. When I was putting it in a safer dial container, I accidently got a drop of water on it from just have washing my face. I quickly grabbed a washcloth that was sitting on the desk next to me to "dab" off the water. When I looked back at the dial, all that was left was a black smear and metal showing... not even a single letter or hour marker left... I had accidently used a washcloth my girlfriend had just used to remove her nail polish, and destroyed the dial with acetone.... I feel like such an idiot right now.

No pic of it before but I'm sure many of you know what an amazing GILT dial looks. Absolutely pristine with a beautiful orange patine would be the only way to describe it. I can take a pic now but all it is is a blank metal disk now :( Maybe I can get $20 for scrap.

Ouch - doughnut! What were you doing washing your face while 'working' with precious vintage watch parts? Sorry man - don't beat yourself up too much about it though.

I had just come back from the gym and washed my face and I noticed I had left the dial out on my desk and wanted to put it back in its dial case.

Yes. Its was left out and I wanted to put it in a safer dial container than just leaving it on the desk.

I can't commiserate without visually understanding the damage, so get a pic on here and I will instantly post a sad emoticon with a very heavy heart.

Can't be true. Even acetone would not completely kill a dial in seconds.

Here, here.... find an old crap dial... get acetone on a cotton bud and see what it does... it wont take it to bare metal in seconds!!!

Further acetone evaporates extreemly quickly unless the cloth was saturated (which one would feel) chances are after 30 seconds there wouldnt be enough acetone left on the cloth to damage the dial. All woman I know use cotton balls to remove nail polish... even if your partner used a cloth surely you would have noticed the "paint" residue on the cloth.

I find this post to be HIGHLY unlikely!!!!!!!!!!!

There is almost no substance that would take the dial to bare metal in seconds.

Acetone could easily ruin the dial but to believe that one drop of water wiped with a rag that had acetone on it who knows how long ago is lunacy.

Pics or it didnt happen (but we all know it didn't)

I just sucks because it belongs to this old lady who brought it to me for safe keeping and its really sentimental to her. Do any of you have or know where I can find the exact same dial to give her so she won't know what happened?
