Curious Watch Deal

Hey guys! I found a vintage Submariner 5512 at a local reputable jeweler. He said it was from 1972 and I saw it was on a jubilee style bracelet, had the 4 lines one the dial and had some aging. I don't believe it had the box/papers and the links had some spacing. The jeweler was asking 4000 but i've seen them run from anywhere on eBay from 5800+ this is a very reputable jeweler- I'm just curious as to what I should look for when I go back to look again.

Thanks!

Value is always in originality, hands, dial, bezel, etc... How much has the case been polished, etc... A stretched bracelet is the least of your worries

Pictures are the only way to go...

Either he is clueless as to its value or something is very wrong...Id guess the later. But in either case w/o photos its all speculation.

A original 5512 for $4,000? Nope, no way not going to happen. A franken, maybe but this is all speculation without pictures.

Could be a perfectly legit watch. Jeweler buys it for $2k from seller who recalled paying $400 for it, so exited deal happy. Jeweler marks it up 100%, and is perfectly happy doubling his money.

Pics wil help.

Agreed. I bought a 14060 for my father's birthday last year and the seller asked if I wanted his "old Datejust" he never wore as well. I paid $4100 for the pair. Best part: the 14060 was serviced the year prior.

I forgot, pics or it didn't happen

I'm no expert, but at the very least it looks like a resumed dial due to it having no patina at all. I've never seen a 5512 with hands like that either. Some very early subs had gilt hands but the second hand usually isn't straight.

I'm sure the pros will chime in shortly but I fear this is a Franken at the very least. Might make an interesting project watch if enough is legit though.

Good luck.

Hands and dial look replaced with crap. There is much of the value. Tops of the CGs look polished down pretty good.

Difficult to see clear details of the dial in your pics. It appears to be similar to a chapter ring gilt but I suspect it is a redial or fake. This dial should be in a 1960-63 PCG 5512 if it was correct. Additionally, the hands appear to be gilt which is wrong for this year of 5512 and the second hand is incorrect. Looks like a complete mashup to be honest. If the dial is a genuine gilt then there is some value there but I have great doubts that it is.

Stay away from this...its all wrong. The case is much later than whatever is inside. If you look up frankenwatch in the dictionary, you get a similar image.

To be honest I have absolutely no idea what Gilt, Chapter Ring or PCG or CGs mean. Just an impulse buy.

I have retyped this a few times now.
You have purchased a parts watch.
Better pics would help, but it looks like the case, dial, hands, and bracelet are from different eras and not all Subs. I have issues with the dial and hands.

This thread is a mix of lol and bs.
This is why you only buy watches from reputable people.
It's sad when you're on a forum that is telling you it's a Franken and you post it on another forum and don't mention it. I get that you were duped but it's no reason to dupe anyone else. But then again it looks that if you get your asking price you're making over $2000.
So... Congrats??

Yet you just bumped it asking for offers ten minutes ago? Or am I missing something?
