1601 advice

Hi guys,

I've been after a 1601 for a while now. This one caught my attention.
Does this seem like a good buy to you? Can you spot anything?
Seller asks $2,800.

Thanks!
JP

That is one nice watch. However, if you want originality, this matte black dial is not correct for your watch. It is a genuine Rolex dial alright, but it belongs to a later 1601 DJ.

That doesn't look like matte black to me... price is on the high side but the dial is indeed rare and very nice... watch is in overall very good condition...

Very nice! .. I like the pie pan dials on the vintage DJ's and DD's.

Is the bracelet included in the sale, or is it only the watch head being offered for sale? I ask because 2,800 without the bracelet is a bit high in my opinion. If the original bracelet is included and it is in great condition, then 2,800 USD is a good price.

Thanks guys! It’s the head only, so no bracelet.
Pretty sure I can get the seller down to $2,6k.

Doesn’t look like matte black to me either?

If it were me, I would try to buy at a price under 2,000 USD. I only say this because I have seen them go for less than 2k in similar condition. The condition is not bad at all, but I see these go for 2,400 -3,000 but they have bracelets and Rolex box and chronometer hang tag included.

That's a beautiful watch. Maybe your friend would be kind enough to tell you where you can get one like it for under 2k.

The days of good 160x for under $2k or even £ or € seem long gone.

Looks a little pricey without the bracelet.

Thanks guys. I’m finding it hard to find a 160x with bracelet below the $3k mark.
Having said that, I’m not keen on the bracelet anyway, would always wear it on a strap.
I guess it would be a decent deal to get this one for $2,400-$2,500?

Please tell me where some of you are finding vintage DJs for low 2k or even under 2k. I personally don't see that at all. I actually thought $2.6k for the head only was on the low side.

I see these with the bracelet for ~$3.5k. Give or take depending on condition and version of DJ.

I really think a lot of ppl on TRF stopped looking at market prices a few years ago and don't realize where they have moved to.

If some rando tells you the price is too high and doesn't give you a link where you can buy it for his price don't listen to him. Ever.

A legitimate dial can never be too 'new' for a watch. If you RSC service a 30 year old watch you get whatever the current dial is. That can hurt a double red sea dweller but not a DJ.

That's a beautiful watch, it's worth what you are willing to pay for it.

Thanks for the input Richard and jb.
I agree, prices are not what they used to be and 1601s in good condition with the Jubilee seem to be around $3,200 to $3,500.

Anyway, I pulled the trigger on this one for $2,500 and I gotta say, I’m really happy with that.

Thanks again everyone!

Good advice here from Richard. There are many frugal members here who are clearly out-of-touch with current pricing trends especially for higher quality examples.

Looks like you found a nice watch at a great price. Enjoy!

Just because some people are unable to buy things at the same price I can doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. And my being frugal doesn't mean I'm out of touch with anything .... It means I'm smart. Have a good evening gentlemen .

Gonna have to agree with SkyKing here. I recently picked up a 1601 with bracelet for around the prices that he has alluded to.

Put it this way, definitely an exception not the norm.

I think we're talking about the norm, not exceptions.

You might have misunderstood my quote as I was referring to getting these for under $2K not what the OP paid which was $2.5K which others in this thread are arguing is the "norm" cost these days.

Otherwise, please show us an array of <$2K pieces to prove that it is indeed the "norm"

OK, you were saying you got one for $2,500, not under $2K?

I think 2,5k was an excellent buy. The OP’s children and grandchildren (would he choose to keep it forever) will be very happy. Never let 500 bucks stop you from buying quality.
