Have Explorer I pre-2016, what is next – GMTc Master II or Explorer II 40mm?

Hi All,

Just got the Explorer I and now I am looking for my next one. I o travel, although not as much as I used to and see value in one of the Rolex GMT watches. I will buy pre-owned and have an option of buying a 2006 or 2009 GMTc Master II 116710 Z serial number or Explorer II D serial number in white dial.

I like the GMTc for its three time zone feature, however it looks like a dive watch to me. Moreover, I already have the black dial Explore I and buying another black dial may not make sense. The GMTc is $1,500 more than the Explorer II.

Overall, I find the GMTc much more appealing. On the other hand, I like the idea of having a white dial Rolex that will compliment my Explorer I.

Can’t seem to make up my mind as this will be the watch I will buy this year… famous last words….

"I find the GMTc much more appealing"...only this reason is enough. It's ok to have another watch with black dial. The GMTc is different enough to your Ex1. Keep the other dial colors for something later (DJ, DD or maybe white SS Daytona :D)

Makes sense. The other attraction to polar Explorer was that it is 2005, the year one of son was born.

I am waiting for the seller to confirm the serial number of the GMTc. The 2009 one is listed as Z serial number and I think that may be wrong. If it is 2009, then it should be V serial number as per my research.

I actually have a similar dilemma. I have the same Explorer as you, but my options are Sub/GMT or Milgauss.

I don't think it's bad to have 2 black dial watches, but they are fairly close in general design. I think if you like the GMT more, than that's the one to go for.

I had the Explorer 1 as my only Rolex and went BLNR for my 2nd. Very happy with my choice. So much so I haven’t worn the Explorer since!

I have looked into the white dial Milgauss quite a bit. I like the dial a lot, but it is too shinny for me. I think it will be a fun watch to have for casual days... Plus, does not have the date window.

The GMTc/Explorer II gives me additional features (GMT) that in the long run will be more useful to me.

The Milgauss definitely isn't for everyone haha. I actually want the Z-Blue, as it's the watch that really made me fall in love with Rolex.

I think you should go GMT to be honest. I think it's just a watch you'd enjoy wearing more than the Exp II.

I also have that Explorer, short hands and white gold numerals, just about my favorite watch and the most versatile in the Rolex line.

That said, have always had a thing for the GMT. Yes, it does look a bit like a dive watch, the Sub's more complicated cousin, but I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Just to close out my thread and for those who may be wondering.... Here is what I picked up yesterday and loving it. A nice companion to my Explorer I.

I found this watch at a reputable local watch repair shop. I have been looking for the D serial number (2005) as it is my son's birth year. I plan on giving it to him when he graduates high school.... yes, I know, it is ways away... In the mean time, I plan on enjoying it.

This morning on my way to work.
