Teens talking Rolex

Caught a snippet of a quick conversation between two high school boys today. It went something like this:

A: You’ve never heard of Rolex!?
B: Nope
A: They’re like super expensive - they cost as much as a car. And they’re made in a super dry place...so they don’t rust.
B: Why would anyone buy a watch that costs as much as a car?

They cracked me up. A will likely have one on his wrist 10 years from now and B will likely never care. Or could it be the other way around?

Or "A" will blow all his money chasing luxury and never truly achieve it and "B" will end up appreciating his hard earned Rolex one day.

Or "A" spends all his time on Instagram and "B" actually has a girlfriend.

The only completely solid conclusion that can be drawn from this is that B is sane.

I once heard a clerk at a t mobile store refer to a Rolex as a Rollie and mention that a good Rollie starts at 50K. So there you have it all the SS sports models aren’t good.

It goes both ways. When I got my first Rolex some of my close friends asked about cost. When I told them it was around eight they all said they would never think about spending $800 on a watch. If you're not into watches you just know a Rolex is expensive and that's pretty relative.

B will invent an IPhone app that projects a holographic image of a Rolex on your wrist.

I know a bunch of teenagers through my cycling hobby. The ones I know best know about my watch habit, only a couple of those have any real interest in it.

LOL definitely puts things in perspective.

I remember a good friend in high school told me that his nice Yamaha (or was it Kawai?) piano costs as much as a car ($20k-$30k) and I thought that was outrageously expensive.

At least people can’t steal the piano when you’re walking on the street or from your luggage!

My grandfather's had their collections back in the day. One did stamps and the other watches.

The stamps fetched more insane money back then...

I remember when my son was young and I would drive him and his friends around. I always had to stifle a laugh or two as I overheard them discuss their impressions of the world around them and what they found important.
Kids are fun and offer great perspectives.

If only we could see the world through the eyes of a child forever. It's very special.

My one son at 4 years old said some very incredible things to me after a bad day at the office once. it was random and yet so relevant.

It was all I needed to hear to make the world good again.

Reminds me of these loser 8 year olds I saw the other day. One was showing off his G-shock to the other. I told him to get a Baby G to avoid lug overhang, flashed my Batman, and told them both to work hard if they want to get where I am. They asked me my secret: I said the secret is that there is no secret, but having rich parents helped. Then a police officer escorted me out of the playground and warned me not to come back. He was clearly a millenial with no horological knowledge...

If grey prices continue their trend, soon ALL Rolex’s will be starting at 50k

All kids are different. My two teenage kids seem to have no interest in material things, in fact they’re really hard to buy for at birthdays or Christmas! I’m glad; materialism is a fools game anyway! Experiences motivate them so much more.

Would you rather they be made in a swamp and rust like all get out?

At that age they are far more likely to be thinking and talking about other subjects and substituting the ROL in Rolex for an S
