my $5 was a guess (sorry)..... as $89/5.5 litres = $16 a litre..... they must have a good margin for parts By the way most independent BM owners are ex-BM technician and they are trained by BM Plus they service the car personally and repair when they can whilst BM dealers they just replace and they employ mainly 18-20yo apprentice.... BMpartsonline.com.au and ask Matthew he can get any BM parts at almost 1/2 BM dealer price |

Yeah, buy a Ford. My dealer often runs specials. My latest Mustang oil change, with 6 quarts of synthetic blend and oil filter, was $16.94 USD out the door. They also did a 31-point inspection at no charge. And they offer free popcorn in the customer lounge.

Saab, Lexus and even BM run specials for new car with free servicing for 3 years now... they probably give you an instant coffee on arrival... and ask you to take bus back to work

The cost of BMW required high tech synthetic oil is a big component of the cost of an oil change on a BMW. An oil SERVICE is more than just an oil change.

I'm in a different league, but my Honda dealer is quite competitive with local shops.
They also pretty much always have some special that drops the cost and they apply it whether I bring in a coupon or not. For oil changes, their price is competitive, but they're as slow as molasses, so I don't bother. Of course, Honda is a lot different than the high-end cars, so I'm not making a direct comparison.

My wife has a 2003 325i, and if we had to repair it at the dealer, we'd have gotten rid of it long ago. I've been able to repair everything myself so far, and find it no harder than any other car to repair.
Worn Bushings. Replacement part was $80 (if I remember correctly) repair was 2hrs. Dealer wanted $350. Expansion tank cracked. Replacement was $65 and 1 hour of labor. Dealer wanted $500 Check engine light on. Sprayed MAF cleaner into the MAF... $5 and ten min of labor. Cleared the code with a code reader. Dealer wanted $120 to diagnose the problem. Brakes: $120 in parts and 2 hours of labor. Most of the time was spent jacking up the car and taking the wheels off. Dealer wanted something like $750. We take the car to the dealer just for laughs now...

Very interesting discussion. As was correctly mentioned, any late model high line European car must either be on warranty or on extended warranty. Otherwise you're looking at major money to give dealer/mechanic that could be better spent on a watch.
One of my favorite possessions is a 1987 Porsche Carrera (3.2 black Targa). A model of simplicity, it has no radiator, no power steering and no power brakes. Its engine is air cooled and phenomenally reliable. As for dealers, they show no mercy, having a trusted independent mechanic is the way to go. |

A friend of mine lost a transmission on a 7 series just after the warranty expired. I think he told me it cost $8000 to replace.

Absolutely. I have a 94 530i and a 00 M5, and the only wrench turning I do is changing my own oil (Mobil 1 5w-30 btw), the rest I have my indy do, and he doesn't charge $99 an hour like the stealership.

$63.55 for 4 changes, takes about 20 minutes. I'm very tired of wasting money on depreciating assets. Cars, houses, women ... |

AUDI 25,000 scheduled maintenance = Oil change, tire rotation and re-balancing, resetting of TPMS. $276.
So basically they gave me an oil change and did what NTB would charge me $25 for and I had to hand them an extra $175.

Why do dealerships lie so much and so often? I guess I wouldn't mind paying thru the nose for top quality service, but even when you pay I don't get top quality and the lie up sell has become so blatant now it's a joke.

Well, holy thread bump, but very interesting one so here we go...
The Premier BMW "stealer" here in Finland, wanted to charge me 4950 euro for replacing the complete vanos system on bank 1. Only fault even on their comprehensive high-pressure vanos test showed (in print) immortalized on my garage wall the 4 solenoids (two on each cylinder bank = connected to inlet and outlet cams) not performing as should. A solenoid is 100 euro, so 400 euro. I'm having my favorite tuner, mechanic and fellow watch fan Raikku to replace them. Hoping we would join this forum!
