Advice needed on a root beer 1675
Hi guys,
I have a 1675 root beer GMT that was last serviced in 1978. It was purchased in Argentina in 1975 by my father. It has a nipple dial and oyster bracelet but the bracelet is only steel not two tone steel and gold. I don't really wear this watch but I had some others that were going in for service so I brought it along also. Rolex told me that since the hands had been refinished elsewhere they needed to be replaced at a cost of $700 CAD and they wont service the watch unless they replace them. The hands have some green corrosion on them which is why they were polished before I guess. They also recommend replacing the crown and tube, acrylic glass, and dial. If they replace the dial and hands," it would be of current type available." Will replacing the hands diminish the value in any way? How about replacing the the acrylic and crown and polishing the case and bracelet? My other question is about the bracelet itself. I have never seen a root beer GMT with a non two tone steel oyster bracelet and wondered if it was a rare option or the dealer switched it or what?? Thanks in advance |

An independent watchmaker can replace a whole lot cheaper imho. 700 CAD just for hands is pretty high for Lumi hands that are not what came on the watch.
If its been worn and needs a good polish RSC usually does a nice job. As to bracelet it could have been replaced or traded out when sold. The two tone would have been a lot more $$. Send a few scans for much better evaluation, watch and bracelet. m |

If the incorrect bracelet bothers you, I would just get a high-end leather strap. This reference looks great on leather!
