Predictions on what 2020 holds.....
Excellent read.
I found the second sentence of this passage to be a sad but astute observation. “.....I am personally among the relatively small (15-20% of current watch enthusiasts) who like thoroughly original, even futuristic watch designs. As we are not in an era of optimism for the future, accordingly, as a society, we aren’t as excited about futuristic-looking object.” Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Great article!
The Zenith Defy Inventor caught my eye. I love the I Aeronith bezel and the movement tech is amazing. |

Fun read - Finally someone bold enough the define the appropriate collection size i.e. n+1 = 30. Should leave some room for many here on TRF to further add to their collection before it becomes "too much".
One of the most interesting areas of watch consumer psychology I began to study in 2019 is what I call watch-collection threshold levels. The idea is that, at some point, watch collections get so large in number that the collector feels it necessary to downsize before adding more watches to their collection. I suspect that consumers get a sense of cognitive dissonance when their collections get to a certain size threshold, at which point the consumer is more interested in “refining” their collection as opposed to adding to it. My estimate is that the collection size threshold for most consumers is between eight and 30 watches. |

A good article but I don't understand the numerous references to 2019's faltering and bad economy. Maybe in the rest of the world but in the US the economy, for now, is booming.

Yes I think Adams is confusing his falling advertising revenue with the state of the nation...

Adams thinks we're in a buyer's market, and that will continue in 2020. He does exempt rolex, patek and AP, but even so, that seems like an odd opinion.

Very well thought out and put together article. Seem like the main tone is that 2020 will bring more volatility... for luxury watch sales and the greater global marketplace as a whole. Thats not noteworthy by itself, most folks recognize that possibility. Perhaps if we say recession enough then we may just be able to talk ourselves into it.

Apple has had its best year in the stock market since 2009, and I bet if Rolex was a publicly traded company it would have had an incredible run too. |

Thanks for the link. A thoughtful article.
I agree about the future being practical classic watches and it being a buyers market for the non usual suspects. I just picked up the Omega De Ville 39.5 blue dial on bracelet to ride around the city with. Incredible watch and, of course I am a well connected collector, I got it for a price I could sell it to a dealer for and not lose a dime. Even the average astute buyer could own one with little downside but it is so nice I could not see any reason to part with it. |

While I prefer the black dial, polar white seems more popular.

Interesting article, but I believe the author misses the mark on why Rolex's perceived market strength exceeds its Swiss counterparts.
People keep talking about "better advertising," but I've seen enough Omega, Grand Seiko, and IWC advertisements to believe that's true. I think it's high time someone disproved the notion that Rolex spends more on advertising. It's highly doubtful.
