New IWC Portuguese Chrono Classic (3903)

IWC recently updated the Portuguese Chronograph Classic. Cleaner dial and same movement, but I also hear that they removed the raised sapphire glass - it is not flat. True? I quite like the raised sapphire. What do other people think of this update?

Top left is the "older" chronograph classic (3904), and the bottom is the "new" version (3903).

I used to own the original 3714 and did see the next generation 3904. It was a thicker watch by quite a bit and was more expensive. This newest generation looks more like the original and I like it. I'm not sure how thick it is or how it wears

not sure about the sapphire change but the new version is definitely an improvement as the look flows better. I like it, i just prefer the regular automatic to the chronograph as the sub dials at 3 and 9 work better than 12 and 6. Plus the date window looks better at 6 than at 3 too.

Finally saw the new version in person and can confirm that the new version no longer has the boxed crystal like the older version (crystal is not raised like vintage plexi). Personally, the boxed crystal was one of the defining features for me.

i used to have the silver dial 3904 and put it on an OEM brown santoni strap. It was beautiful....after this new one came out I wanted to see it in the flesh and was very underwhelmed.

Miss this one from time to time

the new one reminds me of this..

With all due respect, and I say this as a fan of IWC, I don't understand what makes this a 12,000 dollar watch. It looks plain to me. Old version was a little more special but still didn't excite me

In the IWC dress watch world, I'd either get a Portofino chrono (Less than half the price and still a nice dressy chronograph) or the Portugese 7 days automatic (classic design and probably the best IWC watch, in my opinion)

I think it’s down to the in house movement in the Classic Vs the 7750 based movement in the Portofino.
Plenty on the secondary market for under $8k.
I agree, not IWCs best.
