what are the most affordable (used) models

are the 111 and 000 the cheapest of the bunch? i actually like the manual wind aspect. is there any reason not to get one of the base models? only thing i'd really like is the seconds hand. so what one should i be looking for. 44mm and up. and are any models $3000 or under used?

i think the 000 is the lowest end on the food chain. but for less than $3k, i think the watch would either be beat up, no box or paper, from a seller with no history ...

You can get a 000 for under 3k, but it'll be beat up. You could always PVD/DLC it and it'll look brand new with a black casing, but that'll cost you $500-$600.

I don't think you'll find a PAM for under $3k. Look around and you'll find something good! Take your time and enjoy the hunt.

BTW, to get your terminology correct (for talking with other Paneristi).

A Base is a two handed manual wind watch
A Marina is a three handed manual wind watch
A Contemporary is a three - four handed automatic watch usually with a date
A manifattura is an inhouse movement watch.
A special edition is a one year run and can be any movement/hand combinataion.

People often say base model, when they mean entry model.

So long answer...
A 111 is a GREAT watch.

Not exactly. You have options however.

The 111 is a manual wind movement (OP XI - ETA 6497 modified movement) and it does not come on a bracelet.
More info on Panerai movements (click me)

You have a few options. You could buy an OEM bracelet and find the correct write micro adapters (think end links) then it'll fit like a glove. Or, you can find an aftermarket bracelet and it'll most likely be designed to fit the 111. Another option is to go for a Contemporary model with the bracelet already sold. 279 is a Ti example. I can't remember the numbers b/c to be honest, I don't like the bracelets. The straps are where it is at for me.

I actually made a mistake above too.

A Historic Marina is a manual wind three hander.
A Contemporary Marina is an auto with 3-4 hands and usually a date.

sorry for the confusion.
