Airking (that particular model) is one of my favorites. The only reason I chose Explorer I instead was because I prefer the 39mm on my smaller wrists. The AK pushes all the right buttons as far as I am concerned. Love the dial. Like the heft. Looks at home in the office or on the trails.

IMHO It is a COOL Rolex.

The scarcity of all the other steel sports models has made people more closely consider the 40mm AK, instead of just dismissing it in lieu of a sub, GMT, or explorer. It's a great watch in it's own right!

Unfortunately, the enhanced scrutiny has raised the demand and prices a bit second hand over the past year or so, and it's not as attractive as a value proposition as it once was (then again, none of the Rolex's are!).

Yeah. I paid Msrp plus tax. But I like new minty watches with my name on it and I’m willing to pay more. The price difference was about a grand. Well worth it to me to go new from AD.

Your buddy was lucky to get it 12% discount. I got mines last April and it was my first Rolex. I went gray and got it for MSRP and no taxes since I got it from out of state. Was going to get it from a AD where I live but wanted to avoid the taxes because I don't have the cash flow like a lot of others do, so every dollar I can save I will. They're going up in price and getting hard to get.

What a beauty! That’s the great thing about Rolex watches, they all have a special appeal...if you told me a few years ago that I’d spend 13k on a yacht master I would have laughed... fact is it’s the most beautiful watch I’ve ever owned, hands down!

There you go- that's sort of the point I'm driving at. If we look beyond resale figures, there are other watches that, deep down inside, we simply like to own/wear/ etc. Air-King is just an example to illustrate that point.

Typically this happens when people can't get what they want. Fall in love with what's left. Looks great man!!!!!! The explorers envious twin.
