Questions about dials and Rhodium

Pardon the naieve questions, but here goes...

Is "Rhodium" just the color of the dial and is painted onto a base metal, is it the actual material (chemical symbol rh) the dial is made of, or is the dial some other metal and plated with rhodium?

And what material in general are the dials on a Rolex made from? For the black, white, and colored dials, are they paint on metal?

Thanks for any info...

-Dan

Mostly brass, and rhodium is just a colour.

Most of the dials are brass and then painted. Some of the experts will chime in with certainty. I believe the Rhodium is just a color and not the actual metal. It's a lot more cost effective for Rolex to paint it a Rhodium color and not use the metal:-)

Others are pretty correct. Most dials are brass. The sub's black, explorer II white, hulk green etc. colors are lacquered. Electroplating is used for Rhodium.

Dials on PM watches are usually also made out of the same metal.

Interesting, thanks for the info. So the Rhodium dial on a yachtmaster 40 is Rhodium electroplated on brass? How do they get the starburst pattern?

Thanks for the info! Including a solid gold Blusey? They enamel blue over a gold dial?
