New watch for mom and pleasant surprise

Sorry for the long post but had to share. As background, the TOG with blue face was one of the first Rolex's that caught my eye, back in the mid-2000s. I passed on it at the time but was able to track one down during the Jared fire sale years later.

The TOG shared wrist time with my other watches, but once I acquired the 116610LV a few years ago, the TOG was collecting dust. I ended up giving the TOG to my mother to wear on permanent loan. My mother has always appreciated Rolexes but isn't the type to go and buy one for herself. However, it has not been lost on me how she quickly took to having one on her wrist and how well she carried it!

Over time, I always wanted to get my mother her own proper Rolex, instead of a hand me down. One with her name on the card and stickers galore when she opened the box. I recently began plotting with my sister to go halfsies on a Datejust, and started working through the options. I know she liked the 36 mm size, oyster bracelet and the fluted bezel, so the other details were easy to work out.

I called my AD and of course they were more than happy to help out.

The twist in the story was what to do with the TOG? Of course I was not going to ask for it back. After presenting my mother with her new Rolex, which she loved, she handed me back the TOG. I then mentioned to my father that I would love to buy him one as well but know he's never been into Rolexes.

My father has never been a material person, and to my knowledge has never worn a watch that cost more than $50. To be honest I've been jealous of many on TRF who spoke fondly of their experiences with Rolexes with their fathers.

We then took a look at the TOG in my hand and then at each other and smiled. I'm beyond excited at how this all worked out! Although he was clear afterwards he didn't want or need a new Rolex down the road.

The wrist shot

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Congratulations to all. Great story.

It always amazes me how good a 36mm Datejust looks on everyone.
