5980/1R vs 5990, which one would you choose?

Hypothetically speaking...

If you could choose one to buy right now, which one would you buy and why?

The 5980 1r. Cause the 5990 is kind of like a fat boy of a nautilus... I always say if rolex made a nautilus its the 5990.

That said. I prefer the 11/12

5990. Much more useful complications.

5980/1R because it's prettier (I own both). Aside from date, complications are not useful to me on any watch.

Though I’m more partial to steel, I’d still go for the 5980. It’s just a more aesthetically pleasing watch.

That’s a RG monster and my pick. It’s gorgeous - less monotone

If you like them both but could only choose one, I'd go for 5990, it's understated, has useful complications, very practical. However, if you might get both overtime, I'd start with 5980/1R, I heard an unconfirmed rumor this is the last year for 5980 line.

5990. Whilst I love the 5980, in my opinion the 5990 just improves on the design

- 5980 chrono pushers are at a bit of a weird angle
-5980 bezel is too thick for me
- 5880 bulls eye too dominant
- 5980 hour markers too large, and looks unbalanced with 5, 6, and 7 missing
- 5980 and 5990 are effectively the same thickness, so don’t get the comment from FatNinja, plus the 5990 has a flatter case back so sits on the wrist better

What do you think of the dial color of the 5980?

Being 18k gold vs. steel, yes. That said, it’s a lightweight compared to a platinum Daytona.

Both the 5980/1r and Platona are special occasion pieces for me as they’re simply too uncomfortable (heavy) for daily wear.

A 5990 or 5980/1a are better options if it’s your only watch or one that you intend to wear frequently.

I like the 5711r

I will tell you that I think the 5711’s in either steel or gold is the best watches in the line up and is a true representation of what genta designed.

I used to have the 5980/1a with the black dial. Not sure if it’s exactly the same colour as the 1r, but on the 1a the light to dark graduation on the dial wasn’t very apparent. Maybe because I always felt the dial seemed very small - it’s all hour markers and bulls eye.

Yep I sure agree, my steel 5711 white gets most wrist time. Hey are you saying your RM is the same or less in thickness?
