Rolex 6694 with Gilt Black Dial and Gold Markers

Hi guys! Im new to this forum and I just bought my first Rolex! I bought it off a local seller in Hong Kong and im wondering what you guys think of the watch.

This watch has a black gilt dial with gold markers and I realised it sunbursts a little and looks slightly brown in bright light and from some angles. I also noticed the crystal/cyclops and the dial to be slightly misaligned. What do you guys think? Or am I just being to OCD since its a 40 year old watch.

If you are looking for a second opinion whether you should have the slightly misaligned crystal sorted, frankly my answer would probably be no... the watch is not in a particularly good condition to start with. The case has been polished and re-brushed and it's only in overall fair condition.

And truth be told the 6694 is not a particularly special vintage piece so I doubt giving it a full service etc is worthwhile, money wise. Unless you got it for a really really good price.

How's the condition of the movement and case threads? Condition of the water proof gaskets? If this were my watch I'll probably have those checked before anything else...if your intention is to wear it.

Mind if I ask how much you paid for the watch?

Decided to keep it! Gonna get a new crystal and hopefully hands installed on it today. I’ll post more photos of it later!

if I were you I'd keep the original hands, change the crystal if the replacement is original, and otherwise keep the watch as is.

And I'd definitely have the movement service if it's needed.

Here's my 6694 I picked up a couple years back. it's a 1984 and in pristine condition. I had it serviced at the RSC, movement was serviced, crystal, all baskets and crown were replaced.

It's now running at a steady +3 seconds a day.

That is a good route to follow if you heed the advice about saving all the original parts.

Now, that eliminates the Rolex Service Center as a repair facility because they will never return old parts that are replaced.

Be most careful choosing a watchmaker as you are potentially handing them 2 years’ worth of income in the value of just a few original parts.

Use the resources on TRF making that selection. Have an appraisal done by a certified vintage resource. Document the the condition of the watch right in their shop by taking photo’s both inside and out, watch, bracelet and clasp. Insure it on a special policy for stated value (assuming your homeowners excludes high values on watches).

I applaud your choice to make it useful, but don’t flush thousands of dollars down the drain in the process.
