Late 1960 Datejust: Dicey serial number? 1967 or 1968?

Hello,

I have a chance to buy a late sixties Datejust 1601. It's very nice, fluted white gold bezel, stainless steel bracelet, box & papers. I don't doubt the authenticity, but I doubt the year of manufacture.

The seller insists it was made in 1968. Inside the case back reads: "Montres Rolex SA Geneva Switzerland Patented Stainless Steel 1601 11.68."

The problem is that the serial number on the watch and in the paperwork is" 2,251,xxx." As I understand it, that would make the manufacturer in 1967.

Maybe I'm wrong abou this.

What do you folks think? I can'tiimagine rolex playing fast and loose with a serial number. Could the serial number be legit, but the case back was swapped out with a back from the followingyear, for some reason?

I can get pics if it helps. What do you think, 1967 or 1968?

Thanks!

From Quality Time: 1850000 .............................1968
2300000 ...........................1969
From Bernard Watch: 2,689,700 1969
2,426,800 1968

so, yes, a 2,251,xxx would be 1968

It's hard to pin down serials to exact years. I have a 1603 DJ with 4th quarter 1966 caseback and 1.5 mill serial, a 1967 band and 1968 papers (full set with other supporting Rolex documents). Check the Serial Numbers Project at The Vintage Rolex Forum for the most detailed reference list.
