Good morning, My name is Spencer and, as you may be able to tell from the title, i'm a new memeber from Wales. I've just completed an eventful 24yr career in the military and tret myself to the watch i've wanted for as long as i can remember; a Sub 5513. I've been into watches since i saw my Dad's 1963 Breitling Navitimer when i was a boy and have since had many different makes (Omega, Heuer, Sinn, Marathon, MKII, Steinhart, O&W etc) and i do favour the auto over others.

One thing about my 5513, it's a 1984 model and the seller told me it could have a 'Maxi dial' fitted and still be authentic because of the year. From digging about, i'm assuming he meant the Mk V maxi dial. I'm not 100% sure as i'm pretty new to the world of Rolex. My question would be, should i and, if so, where do i get one?


This is the beasty. I put the 'Bond' NATO on it myself as, since i've used the Omega and Marathon bracelets the Rolex ones feel cheap and flimsy. Hey-ho.

Welcome, and yes that is a excellent vintage model.

You could clearly have a matt dial fitted to your watch (maxi dial) but getting the right dial isn't that easy. You may find one where the patina on the dial does not match your hands. In that case you may also need to acquire a set of matching hands.

You can find second hand examples of various condition sold on the internet.

Alternatively, you could stick with what you've got, it looks great really

Either way there is no hurry, just find what interests you.

Thanks Lol-x, i must admit, i do like it 'as is' and i would'nt have dreamt about messing with it if the seller had'nt mentioned it. To be honest, i was just wondering out loud if it would be possible.

I did'nt buy it as an investment, it's a dream watch that i've been after for a while. I'd like it to be worn by my kids when old enough and, hopefully, their kids as well. I just love the simplicity of the whole package and the fact it is'nt a modern version makes it that little bit different.

It's amazing really, the amount of watches Rolex have produced, yet i've never met anyone who owns one! I've seen a couple of copies but no Subs, SD's, Daytona's or Air Kings.

I feel lucky to be looking after this one for the next generation.

Great looking watch.. I love the ivory color of the hands and dial... I wouldn't change it..

There are maxi-dials out there without the WG surrounds (which is what you want), but they may be pricey..... However, a service WG surround dial is proper...
