I have bought al my Rolexes with a discount except the Daytona, those I paid full MSRP, flipped 2, kept 1. Did not like it in the end so sold the third one too.
I have bought around 15 Rolex watches since 1994.

Always the same AD. Retail for the unicorns. Under retail for the less exciting models.

Other than D500 I've always gotten a discount on all my buys, but have not bought any other SS Rolexes since the hype, I bought my LVc with a small discount just before it took off and told my young AD about it the other day and he gasped and did a double take, think he's only been working since prices have been rising.

I personally find the implicit condescension toward people who’ve paid over MSRP to be kind of strange.
It’s great that many here have either the means to buy several watches to build up relationships and/or have AD relationships otherwise and/or just get lucky; but many people don’t have the benefit of any of those. Nothing wrong with just not buying in that case, but I also don’t see what the issue is if someone really wants a particular watch and pays the going rate. I say this as someone who has purchased watches at, below and above MSRP—I’m happy to save the money when I can buy at MSRP or below, but don’t necessarily feel the need to lord that fact over others, or consider myself smarter or more noble than anyone else because of it. You know, a lot of people think today’s MSRP is an insane price to pay for a rolex too, but I don’t know if that means we need a bunch of “WHO HERE HAS NEVER PAID MORE THAN $6,500 FOR A SUBMARINER” threads. |

I never paid more than MSRP but there haven't been discounts for some time. If a watch is available only at a premium I will forgo buying it.

Agree, that would be a better query. If enough people would just stop buying at inflated market prices everything would return to normal within a few months.
It's not as if there is no stock, there is plenty of stock but at the wrong place. AD and grey's working together to get more, they live by 'greed is good'. I have it first hand from a certified Rolex watchmaker who used to work for one of the big AD's in my region. He told me boxes and boxes full of hard to get Rolexes are sent to grey's. He no longer works there but suspect it has not improved, on the contrary.

I have 9 Wilsdorf clan watches.......3 were bought retail back in the 60s & 70s, discounted....they were purchased in Hong Kong.
The other 6 I bought pre owned. ADs are overrated.

You may want to qualify this as to non vintage Rolex.
Or not.

I. Have a SubC and a black OP39. Never have, and never will pay a cent above retail. For me, grey and used market is strictly for savings

This is a new phenomenon.
Go back 4-5 years and everything except the Daytona was easily available under retail.

I have not paid any premium on any of my watches.
Can I afford a few grands more on a Rolex? Yes. Would I ever pay that? Never; not for something that amounts to nothing more than jewelry pieces. To me it's not about affordability, but about the will power to set the boundaries against material temptations. Strong people control things rather than be controlled by things. |

For me, after buying a vintage watch that originally sold for a few hundred and paying many, many times that (without box, papers or hang tag, let alone the coveted plastic slip covers), the MSRP thing really takes on a whole other perspective. If you want a nice 5513, you are going to pay a lot more than its original MSRP. You are also going to pay lot more than current MSRP for a no date ceramic sub. Is there really a difference? Booth prices are set by supply and demand. And unless you have a crystal ball, you have no idea what a 5513 or a no date ceramic sub is going to be worth tomorrow. I understand both positions on this, but... If I wanted a model to wear and could not get it at an AD, I would have no problem paying market rate, regardless of whether it was vintage or current production. That is, if I truly wanted and could afford it. Just my opinion.

I've bought five new Rolex in the past two years with discounts on all, the least being a Blnr at list, tax included. I also bought two 5 digit pieces so there went my savings!

Nope.
My first Rolex I got from a trusted seller on here -- a Series K GMT-II at way below MSRP (it's doubled in price from when I bought it, I'm happy to say, thru dumb luck). The second was a DJ I got at a 10% discount from an AD near work. The third I paid MSRP at a local AD because it's for my wife for Christmas and I was having a hard time finding just that model so grabbed it when I saw it (and they wouldn't haggle). To each their own-- if something is only available above MSRP and you feel it's worth the money to you, then it's at the correct price for you, so no regrets getting it. It's hard playing the waiting game, wondering "if I just wait another month/year/decade, it will come down below MSRP". But then you don't have the pleasure of wearing the watch those months/years/decades while you wait! -Dan

Me...
Purchased my 114060 for $7,450 ($50 less than MSRP) in January 2018. Purchased my 126300 DJ41 blue jubilee for $6,700 (MSRP off $7,450) in May 2019 and I used my rewards credit card and got another $150 cash back — so, my total outlay was $6,550. Purchased my 126710BLNR at retail ($9,250) plus state tax = $9,805 in July 2019. ** additional ... purchased my Tag Heuer Monaco at $1,550 (MSRP of $1,750). The only watch I paid sales tax on was the BLNR. All of the others my AD (same for all watches) mailed me watches at their expense since I live right across the border ... so no sales tax Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For my wife's first DJ31 in 2014 they bundled a Tag Carrera Calibre 5 with it for free (effectively 25% off).
Wife's 2nd DJ31 was 20% off and CHNR along with that at MSRP (effectively tax free) Black Daytona C, D-Blue Deepsea, & Blue Sky Dweller all at MSRP + tax. |

I got all of these at MSRP from my AD. I would never pay a premium for a watch.
