PP for me on this one, just not a fan of this Daytona dial and platinum material in general.

No, not an insult just an observation and I'm not offended. If any color, I'd call it robin's egg blue. But if the truth offends you, I can't help it. FWIW, I own one and see the dial daily so I'm very clear on what the color is. How much time have you spent with one?

This is absolutely true, however when did any of us consider watch purchases in terms of value for money?

There is probably less than $3,000 of materials value in that Patek

Worth the price? No. None of them are

Though my belt doesn't always match my shoes, I'm not color blind, but let's not beat a dead horse. I've come across this timepiece twice on the wrists of others. However striking, it didn't sing to me. To each their own.

Cheers

This. 5711/1r vs Platona is a fairer comparison, as both have solid PM all round. Both beautiful and very different.

I agree that the outcome might be different if it were full gold.

Well, I agree but the OP's poll was really more of a value proposition, no? Because if it were a 116500 vs 5712r, that wouldn't be "apples to apples". I still believe this isn't apples to apples but in order to make this comparison, it's really hard to not factor in cost of each. Which I'm sure OP was considering when he made the poll.

I’d have to say that when paying north of $50,000 dollars for a watch the material components of which cost just a few thousand “value” is wholly subjective and cost is probably less of a consideration? No?

If the Nautilus was on a gold bracelet it would have been a harder vote. Daytona for me with the options presented

I think most who buy 50k watches do so for the wow factor from those who know or those who do not. Not for the mechanical intricacies or history of the brand or watch in question. And I believe that applies even more so with the Rolex buyer. Are there exceptions? Sure.

I have a 5980 1R and the platinum Daytona. While I wear the Daytona more, I would have to choose the Patek for its beauty and detail.

In general, the Nautilus range is just nicer than the Daytona range. But in this case, you are comparing the best looking Daytona, with arguably the worst looking Nautilus. So between these two, without a moments hesitation, I would choose the 116506.

I think both are fantastic watches and picked the Patek due to personal experience with it. I do love the Platona though. Just wanted to make some points regarding the Patek based on some comments in this thread as well as random thoughts.

1. It has a really solid feel and surprising weight and heft to it likely due to the rose gold despite the slim profile.
2. The slim profile initially was so different than my other watches that it took a bit getting used to but now I appreciate the sleek nature of it. Sits pretty flush on your wrist versus other watches.
3. The case finishing all around is impeccable and the finishing of the movement with its micro rotor still mesmerizes me every time I look at it. With a loupe and without. It’s stunning.
4. The legibility of the dial is fantastic. I love the brown dial that changes tones in varying lighting.
5. The complications present on the dial are useful and entertaining- power reserve indicator, date, and moon phase is something I never thought I would love as much as I do. It’s cool to go outside at night after seeing the phase on the watch and it matches up
6. The watch does not feel and in my opinion, is not “delicate” I’ve worn it daily everywhere-recently Vegas, all over, Omnia club etc with no worries. Still scratch free as well.
7. I love it on leather strap and find the anti leather strap nautilus folks quite entertaining with their vim and vigor.
8. It’s not “ugly” to me
9. The appearance of asymmetry on the dial actually comes together aesthetically in my opinion. I think the spaces on the dial are filled in nicely.

It’s my grail. I love everything about it. Comfortable and sleek on the wrist. Sitting in my watch box it looks striking compared to my others and I do love them all.

Just a quick blurb on my acquisition. I would drop by this Patek/Rolex AD which was about 2 hours from where I live and chat watches and other stuff with a particular SA there over the period of about 10 years or so. Maybe 2-3 times a year at most when we were in town for a getaway or family sporting event etc. My purchase history consists of buying one Panerai from him. I never put myself on a list for the watch. It was offered when it became available and I was able to get it. Was not even looking to get a nautilus as I figured it would be unobtainium for me as an out of towner with no big purchase history. Goes to show you that relationships do matter. Mine was cultivated over 10 years with no other objective in mind except to talk watches with a like minded SA.

Now with a gold bracelet this is much more of a useful watch for me but on leather it fails to meet my needs.

Patek who?

The name is not even widely recognized and only known by maybe 0.00000010 % Worldwide ....and worn by even less, it may appeal to a small fringe but when trying to compare it with Rolex it is inconsequential.

Rolex is a known luxury brand and recognized by 99% of the people worldwide...need I say more...Daytona for me.

The PP is wholly unattractive to me. Kind of looks like a Bulova my Dad had in the '70's. Daytona all the way.
