Messners Everest Oysterquartz

Period Oysterquartz advertising often called attention to Reinhold Messner and his Oysterquartz assisted 1978 Oxygen free climb of Everest. Early ads in the series clearly show a 17000 on his wrist. Later ads in the series go off the rails display 17013 and 17014 models. Neither of which make sense in that application. Does anyone here know any real info on Messners watch? Which oysterquartz is the real second Everest watch. My favorite in the series featured Hillary and Messner in period gear along with Hillary’s explorer and the 17000.

I have seen that article. It proves Messner has great taste in his personal Rolex. I am more interested in what which watch Rolex sent up Everest to torture test per Messners sponsorship deal. I have seen articles stating Hillary’s team had 2 manufacturers sponsorships. Some stating the watches never left the sherpas pack. I am just bored enough with all this social distancing to wonder if Messners team had any similar circumstance. As the Oysterquartz garners more interest perhaps this story will become more interesting.

I'm a bit bored myself. I'm not sure this will help in your Everest Rolex Oysterquartz relationship knowledge quest, but can't hurt. The two attached images are scanned from a 1986 Rolex Oyster catalog. The first image is the 2nd page "The Rolex Story" section. The last 2 paragraphs references Hilary and Messner's Everest climbs and the Oysterquartz. The 2nd image is the page in the same catalog featuring the Oysterquartz models.

What interests me most about the catalog page is the model numbers. How did I miss the added digit to the 17013 and 17014. I realize the rest of lines added a digit. I have honestly never noticed a 170133 or 170144. I guess it was worth getting out of bed today after all. LOL
