Rolex Day date engraved
I have just bought a Rolex day date 18ct yellow gold on a President bracelet original box but no papers for a very good price.
The watch and bracelet are in very good condition, but the back of the case has been lightly engraved with the owners initials, I dont like the idea of having them removed, would it be very expensive to have the back replaced and is it advisable, are any numbers inside the case back that would no longer match the watch if it was replaced. |

If they're lightly engraved, a quick polish by your local watchmaker can remove them. A DD case back is a big chunk of gold and even with the parts exchange, it's going to be pricy. A competent watchmaker can polish them and rebrush the surface in a jiffy.

Hell, you can do it yourself with some patience and a piece of medium grit sandpaper...

I would take it to someone if you are uncomfortable - otherwise seek advise on how to remove the initials properly yourself.

I would not suggest doing it yourself.
Brushing the caseback can be tricky I would advice having a professional with good references do it |

I'm not sure what the tricky aspects might be. It's about as easy as it gets.

I engraved the back of my sub years ago. Eventually I got tired of looking at it as I did a poor. When I got it serviced, I wanted to replace the back. RSC would not do it, but they did polish it out. They did a good job. I agree with the post of not doing it yourself as your attempt at polishing might yield an uneven look. It is best to leave it up to those who are skilled at this very thing.

I guess no one will suggest leaving the engraving alone? I'm probably a weirdo, but I have a couple of watches with random engravings and I just look at it as part of it's history. One says, "from Elton John to Forever, 9/12/1998" and I just roll with it. Good luck getting the watch looking how you want it though!

I don't even know. I try not to get my hopes up. But if I meet him someday I'll ask him. Sorry for Eltonjacking the thread.
