Why is the english watchmaker george daniels often given the title of "worlds grestest horologist" how is he better than many of the other independent guys (dufour, smith, voutilainen, halter etc.).

Do more research.

It is one thing to make a great watch, but to invent something new is different.

I've been reading about him recently. George had a knowledge of mechanical watches that bordered on godlike. His book, Watchmaking, is still one of the definitive texts even 40 years later. But his ability to invent new parts, the co-axial escapement being his best known invention, is why he has earned that level of awe and respect.

It's important to remember that it doesn't mean he is the best watchmaker ever, just that during his lifetime he was the best.

Well for starters he was Roger smiths mentor and inspiration to start making watches.

I think it is partly inventions like the co-axial escapement, partly the greats that followed him and were inspired by him, and partly that he did more for publicising and explaining the intricacies of mechanical watchmaking to a wider audience (chielfy in 'Watchmaking')...

I understand that watch wise it's hard to find better than Roger Smith, he makes his own cases, Dufour doesn't for example and neither does Voutilainen, he bought the case fabric, like that he has control over the specs, but the style of Smith who is the result of Daniels, is something I have a hard time with, can't say that visually I find it very pleasing to be honest, so we can say what we want, all is great but if you don't like how they look it's hard to justify at least 100k for a simple time only watch...

True, but there is no accounting for persona taste. And that is the beauty of watches, there is one for everyone.
