Not only does it not have to point up (or in any specific direction) its position will change slightly over time as the gaskets age and take a "set."

Wind it in until it stops and back it out until it is straight.
Job done. Seals will still hold to rated depths.

My old Explorer II did when fully tightened. Total coincidence but not normal.

Have to agree Rik perhaps Rolex should remove the crown emblem then everyones crown/knob,would line up somewhere.

My Sub's is almost upwards and my Explorer's is almost perfectly upside down.
It's part of the watch's personality!

My Milgauss and DJ are completely upright, my Sub is perfectly upside down, and my Cellini doesn't screw down so it's wherever I want it to be!!

I never even thought to check, but looking at my GV now the crown does indeed line up when screwed down. Neat little coincidence. None of my other watches have ever lined up so I stopped checking.

Just read somewhere that Rolex patented a new mechanism which ensure the crown will point always into the same direction if it s screwed back.i think we will see in basel

When I bought my TT Sub, the coronet on the crown pointed to about 5:00 position. After a >$1K overhaul including a new crown and tube, the coronet on the new crown points to about 5:00 position.
