Am I crazy to even consider this?
I just saw the Patek 5396 and was instantly in love. I now have a collection of about a dozen of what I consider decent watches (Rolex, Omega, JLC etc.) I am thinking if I sold every one except for the 114060 for my daily use I may come pretty close to getting the Patek by just adding a little money.
My son says don't do it because the Patek will end up staying in the safe and the variety that I have is more fun. What do you think? |

5396 is a very nice watch. Can you give specifics on the watches that you're giving up (brand, model).

Certainly your choice - but the extra complications on the 5396 may not make it the only PP you'd like. Clearly you'd have a tool watch and a dress watch after the deal was done.
There are some PP's I like better for their simple elegance. The Calatrava for instance...

A 1675, a JLC, Omega plus others for one watch? Nice though it is, I'd listen to your son and take your time before dismantling a collection you probably spent years building to own something that may seldom be worn. I really would listen to your son because he'll know you better than anyone on here.

If you think the Patek will be a safe queen either because of the value (you just don't want those $$$ on your wrist every day) or lifestyle (it couldn't be a daily watch for you due to job or whatever) then I'd question the utility of it. Especially when you would be giving up others that are probably daily wearers.
That's the practical answer. Letting the heart lead, the answer would be if you really like it and really want and have the means to get it then go for it. Just make sure you get the best possible deal in selling and buying and so if you need to reverse everything in 6 months times you won't be out of pocket too much (of course you'll probably be out the value of a Sub at the end of it all if you reversed the whole thing but what you going do!). |

Scorched Earth
I would say no. If the 5396 had been a long time grail watch then I would say go for it. But rather than selling everything maybe it's time to look at your collection and lifestyle, and as the financial advisors put it, rebalance your portfolio.
If our lives change so should our watch collections - that doesn't mean selling everything but it might mean trading out and trading in piece by piece until you wear everything regularly and enjoy it. |

The 5396G is a beautiful watch! If you are able to wear a dress watch regularly, it doesn't have to be a safe queen. The only problem with having a dozen watches is that you don't get to wear them all regularly.
However I think you are doing the right thing by taking your time (no pun intended) in making a purchase decision. However definitely check pricing on a new watch at an AD and compare it to pre-owned watch pricing. |

Quality over quantity albeit your watches aren't the ones that can be sneezed at all. I did same route for Rolex Daytona 116506 too

I'd do it if you'll wear the 5396 (that and the 114060 would make a great duo). I'm a quality over quantity guy

I did a similar thing
I traded my watches up and now only have three watches. But they are really good watches. :)

I know it's a Patek and so very special, and it's white gold and 38mm, but if it was me the 5396 is not so unique looking that I couldn't consider substituting in a Girard-Perregaux 1966 Full Calendar and keep more of your original collection.
https://www.girard-perregaux.com/en/...35-11-131-bb60 Of course, the GP will give you nowhere near the resale value of the Patek if you later want to sell it, but if it's a keeper then that mightn't matter. |

I have been on both sides of this before and taken a large collection, 10-12 watches and gone to 4 watches to pick up a grail. I have also refused to shrink a collection. I am currently of the mind set that I like variety and I would not do it. I would sit back, evaluate, wear what I have and see if this is an urge that hangs around for 6 months or a year. If so, might be time to do it. If not, then move on.

I used to have a whole hoard of watches, sold most and now have 3 in the rotation. An AP Royal oak in Rose Gold, Patek 5146g and Rolex Milgauss, the Rolex is my weekend/beater and I switch off between the AP and Patek, could not be happier. Haven't purchased a new watch in over a year.

I have thought of doing this but for the Platona. End of the day I think I need the variety as I wear a different watch every couple of days.
So I say no. |

I prefer quantity over quality, at one moment I had 3 Rolex, 3 Pams, 1 Blancpain, 1 Cartier, 2 Omega and 2 Breitling, but I got a Patek 5712, just after that I got a Patek 5726, and at the present day I have the 4 you see, so 2 Patek and 2 AP, , still have the Omegas and Cartier as they were gifts, and don't regret one second having consolidated. About this model it is very nice but I am more sport orientated, so I wouldn't choose this model but if you love dress watches it's a good choic, I think it's better to have one awesome watch than 10 very nice ones, in any case like was said don't hurry, think about it for at least a month or more, this is important and you need to be sure you are doing the right thing, but I think getting high end watchs is always a good decision if you can do it financially, I am sure the watches you have are great but this is another level, only better are watches from a very small list of independents which go for crazy sums. Also what really made me go from the ones I cited to high end was the amazing comfort, the finishing is great, but the comfort is incredible compared to the watches I had, to be honest after getting the first Patek I couldn't stand wearing most of my watches for more than 1-2 hours, as a result I wasn't wearing them and thought it was stupid to keep them, maybe you could think about not selling them all, keep 3-4 and get the Patek, but take your time, try many and really get what you love the most, at these price levels compromising is stupid, of course if you think you won't be comfortable wearing a watch that price maybe it would be better to get one not so expensive, I mostly went up in watch prices by 5k increases more or less.
Hope it was helpful... |
