ALS vs Patek
Good afternoon.
I'm looking for a ALS Lange 1 or Calatrava (May be 5227). One of those will be my first "serious dress watch". A big amount of money invest of course. Today a Rolex Sub is my everyday watch. Both watches are really perfect and fine machines. First one is a ALS icon and the second one is a little bit more "dress watch". Any advices Thanks a lot Regards |

Both are absolute high-end offerings with fantastic movements and level of finishing representing the best Switzerland and Germany (Glashuette), respectively. Both are iconic in their own way. The design language is quite different, one very no-nonsense German the other very elegant Swiss/French style. Patek is the stronger and more wellknown brand with resulting status / prestige. Whereas Lange is the more rare (approx. 5k watches a year vs. approx. 60k for Patek) and technically interesting brand, a real connoisseur's watch. For the specific references in questions, I feel that the Lange 1 is the most iconic of the two while the 5227 impresses with its very nice sculpted case and hunter back. The 5227 is indeed a little more a dress watch, but can still be "dressed down" with the right strap.
You cannot go wrong with either! Disclaimer: Own both brands and would not trade one for the other...both are fantastic in their own way. |

I would choose a Patek dial over an ALS anytime, anyday.

Lange 1, easily. The 5227 is rather plain looking in person. It is also a dressier option. Lange 1, on the other hand, has a gorgeous dial and a beautiful movement and can be worn for any occasion. I am a little biased because I own a Lange 1.
I truly believe that $50k and below, Lange watches give Patek watches a run for money based on the movements and overall finish. Both will lose equally in the second hand market (not considering Patek sports watches). When you start talking about PCs, things start to get even and then above $100k, Patek watches are mostly superior to any Lange offering. |

ALS beats Patek all day long in every aspect except resale. The Lange 1 is leap years ahead of any Calatrava. Probably one of the most ingenious watches ever made. I have the platinum version. Nothing Patek makes comes close to this watch. Sorry guys. But if value retention is important to you in this market Patek and Rolex are the only way to go.

I would personally choose Lange over Patek when considering the two models you presented. Can’t really go wrong with either, but as someone else stated, Lange is truly a connoisseurs watch. Plus I think it is much more interesting of a dial than the PP 5227. Although it’s a PP, it is pretty plain, at-least for my likings. At the end of the day, buy what you truly love and would wear the most, regardless of brand or other people’s opinions. That’s all that really matters!
Best of luck! |

I also want to add that the Lange 1 is a much more iconic watch than the PP 5226 for the respective brands. If that is worth anything.
Again, best of luck! |

ALS. It’s an iconic reference.
I have *2 Pateks and (hoping) to get my first ALS in a few months. For me, where Patek shines is in the realm of complications (PCs and above) and ALS is the king of chronographs. For time-only pieces, it’s an easy call. Under TS, Patek is trading on their reputation and have dropped the ball on innovations whilst attempting to broaden their target market. The ALS aesthetic is polarising and it’s taken me some time to adjust to it. But the finishing (dial and especially movement) is unarguable and it flies under the radar. It’s something to consider If brand recognition is important to you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I was in the same dilemma recently, I had a clear answer after putting them on my wrist.

I had a similar dilemma. I chose a platinum Lange 1 Moonphase. The shock of blue in the monochrome made it impossible to resist.

I think the Lange 1 is what I would choose between the two but it’s hardly an icon in my opinion. The closest thing Lange has to an icon sure.
Dress watch with a 25k budget give or take I would get a Vacheron 1921 myself.

Icons or Icons of the brand? I think Lang has 3 pieces that within the industry might be considered icons of the brand - Lange 1, Datograph, Zeitwerk.

Lange1, easily. More unique and interesting dial. Useful and easy to operate big date. Amazingly finished movement and case. As others have stated, the Lange1 is the more versatile of the two, as it can be more easily dressed down.
Regarding its "icon" status, I'd agree it's certainly not on the level of a speedy or sub. It's currently the icon of the brand (above the dato and zeitwerk imho). But, it is a unique, distinguishable model that helped launch Lange as we know it; give it time and it will become an industry icon.

I have the Lange 1 and the 5196G. The Lange 1 is so much more elegant and interesting - reminds me of the 5712. The outsized date also makes it more special.
As for price, the Lange 1 can be purchased at 25% off the list price at AD in Hong Kong. I got mine at HK$195,750 which is a great deal. Last edited by qrc36; 1 August 2019 at 11:53 PM.. Reason: Adding pic |

Lange between those two. I've recently been really interested in the Datograph Up/Down.
If you're after a dress watch I would also take a look at the FP Journe Souveraine in Platinum, or Tantalum. |

Calatrava for me. The 5227 is a great representation of Patek's flagship simple, elegant, and understated design.

For me, Lange is great as long as its not being compared to Patek. The only dress watch to never own but look after for the next generation is the 5196!

I would say neither to the two options, and get a Journe, which is my plan in a year or two. The Journe Octa Havana dial checks almost every box for me |

ALS vs Patek

Icon of the brand sure but that’s kind of a stretch in my humble opinion to use the term in that manner. Very few watches are iconic in my opinion and if 99.9% of people have never even heard of Lange let alone the Lange 1 its hard to call it an icon. I’d call it a classic maybe! (For the record I am a big fan of Lange just debating the use of the word lol)

L1 for me, and I'd push the savings boat out for the moonphase version if you can. I'd say it was a WIS icon, most brands have 1 or 2 and this is Lange's, even over the Dato and ZW which are more brand icons.

Depends on how you are going to use it. Calatrava is an elegant, under the cuff, discreet watch. Something like a Lange 1 has a lot more wrist presence. Against that particular Calatrava I think the Lange 1 is very hard to resist. Quality and customer service at ALS has been stellar in my experience.

I own a Lange 1 moonphase in rose. Compared to the Calatrava, this is an easy decision for most interesting 'dress watch'. You can't go wrong with either but the ALS has my vote.
