New York City Restaurants

Heading to NYC for a weekend away with the wife. Looking for some recommendations for fine dining - specifically, a place with amazing seafood. Would also love any suggestions on a great spot for wine/cocktails (pre or post dinner/theatre). Thanks!

Chef Ripert is also a fan of watches. He is a Vacheron Constantin ambassador and has some killer pieces from them.

That's very cool. Would love to meet the chef.

On a side note, I just read that their Sommelier was named best in the US in 2007 and then named best Sommelier in the world in 2008. Wine selections from all over the world. Thanks friend, we are going to check this place out as well!

Wow what a selection! They have two things on their menu that my wife loves - truffle mashed potatoes and lobster mac and cheese. We are definitely going here. Thanks friend!

Second the rec for Le Bernardin. Michelin 3 star restaurant and one of the bucket list restaurants of NYC. Very expensive but worth it for the food and experience!

Acquavit. I haven't been in about a year but it was really great when I last went. Another great one (for high end Italian) is Del Posto.

Also, If you can make your way up to Arthur Ave. in the Bronx, its the true little Italy of NY. Gotta check out Robertos and get their black truffle fettuccine alfredo. Killer little spot.

Fantastic! Robertos here we come. We might have to stay two weeks after all of these great recommendations!

I would agree with Le Bernadin if you're looking for an amazing dining experience with focus on seafood but it isn't the best IMO. I've been to them all.

My order of the best of the best restaurants in NYC are
1) Per Se
2) Jean Georges
3) 11 Madison Park
4) Masa
5) The Chefs Table and Brooklyn Fare

The difference between #1 and #5 are miniscule. Each one will provide a world class dining experience. I always tell people to do the tasting menu and the wine pairing and just enjoy. These people know their food and their wine and better than anyone else so let them take care of you.

BTW- Daniel lost its 3rd star and I'm not at all surprised. I think he does better food when he takes it down a notch. Cafe Boulud and Boulud Sun are fine examples

Marea on 59th at about 8th Avenue is our favorite Italian seafood restaurant in town. But I also add to the recommendations for Le Bernadin. One of the top restaurants in the world.

Another vote for Marea. Brunch on weekends is relatively low key. Excellent seafood, if you like Italian cuisine.

Jean George across the street is also worth visiting.

So many great (Michelin Star rated and not) restaurants in NYC!!!

Per Se is excellent but a little steep -- mandatory tasting menu that costs over $300. I noticed even their vegetarian option was over $300

Eleven Madison Park is a fine restaurant. Reservations are difficult to get.

Can second Aquavit. Nice place, fair amount of seafood on the menu

Jean-Georges, Le Cirque, le Bernardin... all of these places have snooty reputations. They'll take your money while giving you the "in town for a show" treatment

One more: Gramercy Tavern dining room. I've never had a bad meal there

Of these three I have only been to Jean-Georges and I did not find it snooty. I was there at lunch and it was also reasonably priced in my opinion.

Some of these restaurants can be 'intimidating' but the waiting staff is always extremely professional and I have always had great experiences.

Jean-George is killing it right now, such a focused team and really consistent in a number of locations. His two spots on Paradise Island are some of the best food in the Caribbean.

That said, the best part of the NYC dinning scene is the diversity, fall into a few places, explore. Have apps at a few restaurants bars and go back to the spots you liked.

Personally, I live in NYC and don't really have any interest in most of these restaurants. There are so many good options that don't require 4 digit checks that half the fun is finding a good interesting restaurant that isn't living off of a brand that is no longer warranted. Anyone read the NYT takedown of Per Se?

I agree you don't have to drop a ton of cash to have fun, but part of the appeal of eating in a city like NY is the high-end, over the top, uber-experience. No need to fault anyone for whatever they choose, it's their money.

The NYT take-down of Per Se was almost two years ago and depending on who you talk to they have rebounded. As I remember it wasn't just a severely harsh critique on the restaurant but on the style of dining and the prices. Kind of shooting fish in a barrel and somewhat obvious points.

But if you do like an event, I'd be more than happy to go back to Per Se, JMHO

I agree with this now, after having lived in NYC for 20 years. But when visiting the city, or when you first move here, it is kind of fun to go out and hit all of the highly regarded (and highly-priced) restaurants.

Of all mentioned here, I've enjoyed them all but have settled on Gramercy Tavern as my all-time favorite for a down-to-earth, comfortable dinner with amazing food. Every season the menu continues to impress me.

Eleven Madison Park, Cipriani, and Le Cirque are three of my favorites that I will visit when I am in town and they are ones that I have always enjoyed.
