I believe one increasing way to get rich in the UK and US is... to hate coffee.

I was reading a great trilogy by Peter May about the wild lives of hard men who live on the storm-battered Western Islands off the west coast of Scotland.

He had always been, I suppose, a classic contender for that uniquely island condition known as the curam , when childhood indoctrination in unrelenting Presbyterian beliefs resurfaces like a virus after years of dissolute living to reshape its victims in the image of their fathers.

Curam comes for us all.

I had to reread that three times to understand it. Yes, Curam is coming.

Another one:
Was at the end of arranging gift bags today and ran out of tissue paper so I used the one from my daughter's shoe box w/her new shoes in it.

Wow I'm amazed at the frugality of some owners haha
Here are some of mine, that I don't think have been mentioned.

I will never park near the local shopping centre, I park further away and walk because it costs less to park.

I never pay RRP for clothing, I'll search online for discount codes or buy from outlets.

Although I run my own business, the managers within my company take a higher salary than me because I don't have high living costs.

I ask for student discount absolutely everywhere I go, even though I'm not a student. I still get away with it though ;)

I was reading all these posts and see that I do a lot of the same ones. Shut lights off when not in use, my girl buzzes my hair in the garage, do a lot of things around the house that others pay people for etc etc etc. However, I was always taught you get what you pay for when it comes to things and a quote my dad always said, "Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten"

Some of these are really cheap. Sneaking outside food/drinks into a movie theater violates the terms of your ticket. Student discounts are for students, not adults with a full time job.

I agree that negotiation is appropriate in some cases, but haggling all the time is awful. I once saw a guy try to haggle a cup of coffee from $4 to $2. There was 7eleven steps away that sells coffee for less than $2.

I've seen someone get thrown out of a restaurant for trying to haggle menu prices. Bravo to that manager. I don't want to dine with the "I'm special and deserve a special price" crowd

You've all had it too good. We still live in hole by the side of the road, and eat gravel when we can find it.

When the bar of soap is down to a sliver, instead of throwing it out, I rub it into a new bar at the end of a shower. By the next shower the two pieces are fused together.

Thanks for the lecture. Maybe get off the high horse and enjoy the thread, as most of us (I think) appreciate the fact that we're not only ones who like to save. Being around this forum sometimes make me feel like the pauper among millionaires, so it's nice to see that we're all thrifty in our own ways.

I've got nothing against people who are frugal and employ honest methods to save money.

People who save money through cheating, dishonesty, or bullying? They are scrooges that few people enjoy dealing with

While, contrary to your belief, you still know nothing about the people you are so harshly judging, they now know a lot about you....

My wife and I buy coffee at a coffee shop and openly take it to the movie theater. No one has advised us that we were cheating, dishonest bullies.

Here's one I haven't seen yet - slice open the toothpaste tube to scrape out the last paste. Haven't done that one yet but getting some good ideas here.

Doesn't surprise me that, just because we have the means to buy a Rolex, most of us are still very frugal in a lot of ways. I have a lot of methods I use to save money. Most of them by trying to reduce my carbon footprint. I've also lived in the same house for over 30 years, owned my last car for over 20 years and still dump about 20% of what I make into savings and investments. But there's also a lot of things I refuse to skimp on. Mostly travel and dining.
Being frugal is one thing but I know people, friends and family, who are worth much more than me, who are downright cheap. It's hard to hang out with people who spend every waking moment trying to save a buck. Sometimes you just gotta splurge.

Love the Accord, we’ve had two of them and a civic and the new ones look great but wifey wanted a GMC Terrain, let’s see how maintenance free that is.
I drive a 2009 F150 and hope to keep it a dozen more yrs.

I never said that activity constituted bullying. If your theater allows it, that's up to them. Many theaters do have a ban, since their business model relies on high margin concessions.

by bullying I am talking about people who intimidate/yell/threaten in order to get a discount, refund, or free stuff. Anyone who has worked in customer service has likely seen what I am referring to.

Depending what one's interest rate is, its better to not pay your mortgage down early (I don't know if you did that, it just triggered the thought). You're better off throwing that money into a stock fund for a couple decades.

Is it bad that I am reading this post and saying to myself, “yeah, I do that... and that... and that, too.”?

1. Rush to return movies to Redbox before 8:30...
2. Always choose the cheapest option for parking (I like to park as far away from other cars anyway)
3. Fly on the cheapest fare possible (even if using points) if I’m traveling solo for leisure...
4. Exhaustively search for the best deals on all consumer goods, and ask for price matching, if necessary...
5. Have no problem wearing a watch that costs 100x more than my clothing on a given day...
6. Spend cash only (except online), save all my change, and cash it in once per year on my birthday...
7. Live in a modest home valued well below my annual income...
8. Cut my own hair...

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Coolest thread for a while. Gotta love the honesty of some members. Whilst not BIG investors with huge gains I'd imagine the majority here make small/medium ones and can appreciate that every little thing adds up. It's not just the money but less shopping for things means more time for things we love too.
