Why are the new Cellini's so expensive?
Looking thru the Rolex web-site I found that the Rolex Cellini is up to $17,900 list!! Anyone have an opinion on this style?

It seems to me that the Cellini line is reasonably priced, although they are way out of my league.
The Cellini Time is MSRP $15,200. Cellini watches don't get the respect they deserve in my opinion.

I'm not trying to justify the price tag just providing some thoughts on why the watch commands a premium price
✓ The off centre secondary date dial rather than the date window adds horological sophistication & personality ✓The beautiful "rayon flamme de la gloire" Guilloche engraved dial ✓ 18K WG or Everose casing ✓ American Alligator for the straps, the same exotic skins Hermes uses for their very expensive alligator ( or Himalayan crocodile ) Birkin handbags. I briefly considered one. I decided I wanted a more versatile watch and one I could safely get wet.

Cheaper and MUCH better (reliable, durable) movement than a similar Patek Philippe, except that for some sad reason the new Cellini has been designed big, bulky, heavy, unwieldy on the wrist. I’d buy one in a heart beat if it were 38.5 mm or less and flat. In other words, I’d buy one if it were an elegant watch and not a hockey puck on the wrist.

The new Cellini, except for the leather strap, can get as wet as you want it to. It is 50 or even 100 meters water resistant. I need to check exactly how much.

With the Lange Saxonia buyable for under £10K I think there or slightly under is where Rolex should price this to really compete.

Would not consider them since there are amazing Langes and Vacherons I could get for the same price. I love this specially!

Cellini is priced in line with other Rolex offerings that have a strap and gold case.

So true! Far better warranty too. An not sure why Patek doesn't include a 5, or better still, 10 year warranty instead of only 2. Rolex is a solid watch, and when it needs service/repair it is done in a timely manner too.

Pateks are for those with more money than sense. I ought to know. I used to buy them and sell them back at the turn of the century. I still keep three of them and they only work because I found a very special watchmaker in NY who works on them. I truly dislike PP business practices and their unreliable and iffy watches.

I think it’s a beautiful watch and now want to try one one next time I’m at an AD...which I hope to maybe stop in one in 2018.

I don't get the appeal of a Cellini

Are VCs really that expensive to service? Have you owned one?

I like the Cellini line-up but would not buy one. Not for lack of quality or styling but because so many other options exist in the leather strap, dress watch world. JLC, VC, PP etc. The resale on a Cellini is limited. For me Rolex is the King of the metal bracelet watch. It is one of the thing the brand is know for so I will stay with what Rolex does the best.

I profoundly dislike the double hour indices separated by the inner chapter ring. That's really messed up IMHO. I wouldn't wear one if given to me, would go straight to the sales corner.
I really ike dress watches in general, like a Calatrava, Patrimony, MUT o Portofino. IMHO, Rolex has a lot to learn from other Swiss watchmakers in terms of dress watches. I'm sure they can do it if they want do, but right now it looks really half baked to me. |
