DJ41 feels grainy when winding it manually.

Hi guys,

I purchased a 41mm Datejust (ref. 126300) last October. When the watch is wound manually it feels and sounds grainy and crunchy and as opposed to the smooth feeling when winding a Submariner. I took it in to my AD soon after i bought it and they sent it to Rolex for them to take a look at it. It came back soon after but still feels grainy and crunchy when wound manually. Its keeping great time and is otherwise perfect. I was wondering if this is a common issue with watches that have the 3235 movement or the Datejust 41. Let me know if you have had a similar experience or if you have heard of this issue before.

Warmest regards,
Ibrahim AlOthman

My brand new Sub C had the same issue for a few month, it has since disappeared, all smooth as butter now.

It's fully wound, stop winding it.

My DJ41 (126300) has a similar issue. When winding it after a complete stop, it winds very smoothly initially, but becomes grainy when the spring is loaded with tension. I just stop winding when I feel the resistance building.

BTW, it keeps perfect time (+/-2 sec) and I get the full 70 hours of power reserve after wearing it for the day.

My DJ41 has clicks when I unscrew the crown, and clicks when I wind it.
It does it from a dead stop too.

I guess it's fine. Works well.

I got a new Pelagos (Tudor mvmnt) and I could hardly feel that I was winding it, super smooth.
I was surprised at the difference.

I had the same problem with my new'ish DJ41, gritty winding.

Sent it back to Rolex, who returned it saying there was nothing wrong

It's still intermittently gritty - especially compared to my Sub, which is butter smooth

My sub went in for a grindy wind and came back fixed under warranty. All the RSC noted was that movement was checked. That being said, my AD had told me they wouldn’t have sent it in; they claimed it is normal.

My DJ41 (purchased Dec 18’) winds smoothly until it reaches full power reserve. When it hits full power reserve it becomes gritty and somewhat resistant.

seems the new 3285 movement is a little grainy on both my DJ41 and SD43.

Is it only happening when you are winding slow?

I’ve noticed this on my SD43 and BLRO. The newer movements are slightly grainy as you say compared to the last generation IMO.

This is just how the new movement is. It is the same with my SD43 which becomes grainy, as compared to my BNLR and Explorer II, which remain smooth.

I have the same grinding sound and feeling when manually winding my wife's DJ31 with 2236 caliber. Not sure what to do...

I'm really going to miss the 3135 going forward. A smooth workhorse.

I do confirm - grainy feel when manually winding my DJ41 as well. The grainy feel intensifies after few winds, perhaps towards reaching full wound state.

My DJII has a bit of that as well. My SD43 on the other hand is a smooth as silk. Not sure what causes this.

Interestingly the watch that is the most enjoyable to wind is a Tudor. Not only very smooth, but that large crown is so much more responsive with no "play" in the minute hand, unlike my Datejust

I sent my 2018 DJ41 in for poor running.

It was gritty while unwinding the crown and gritty winding.

When it came back, (got a full service) it winds silky smooth.

From what I've learned here, it was in for the 3235 lubrication issue.

Correct ,smooth until fully wound then becomes grainy on the 3235.
3135 remains smooth no matter how far it is wound .

I had a similar issue but this was with a 40-year 1675! Winding felt grainy (to the point I was afraid to wind!) and I sent it in to RSC; they said it needed some cleaning. Afterwards it was waaay better.

Similar experience with my Datejust 41. It has a different quality to the wind than my other models. I don't think there's any need to worry.

Also, as a side note, the DJ2 I also had before my DJ41, was the same grainy movement.

If you're comparing with a Sub C, then you'll notice the difference. I thought the same in comparison to my Sub C, too.

313o is a 3135 without date, and once it's fully wound, it feels grainy. Doubt 3135 remains smooth beyond that.

As others have stated, my newly acquired DJ41 is also a bit grainy/crunchy when winding. Hoping it smooths out over time. Otherwise, no issues with the watch.

I find the winding mechanism has a bit of resistance to it, it's 2 years old. Brought it to the AD but could not compare it with others as there is no stock left in the store!!. The AD was wearing an Omega 300M as was I. Same watch with vastly different resistances. I suspect there is a wide variation in "normal"
