are current 2 tone models clasp's gold plated in the middle?

Stupid question im sure but regarding the gold stripe down the middle of a DJ41 or sub/gmt clasp I dont see how you could use solid gold and fuse/weld steel to each side.

Also whats the weight difference between a steel and a 2 tone for the dj41 and gmt or sub?

The thin strip of solid 18K gold on the TT sub clasp is around 60 plus microns thick, if gold pated it would be around 4-10 microns thick, but its a strip of solid gold fuse welded to the clasp and fliplock centre.

ok so its basically a thick plating. is the crown on the flipper also "sprayed" over with gold?

Cannot you read it's a thin strip of solid 18kt gold it's not gold plated,on early models the winding crown was gold plated, but later models had what they call monoblock crowns solid gold but a internal steel sleeve for winding threads.

The gold strip on the clasp is a piece of gold adhered to the steel clasp. They can and do fall off. Glad most do not fall off even after years of wearing and polishings. I wonder how hard it would be to fuse three lengthwise portions of metals as one for the clasp. The middle one would be gold.

I wish they went back to the older design with the hidden clasp or the current DD one. yeah no micro adjust but to get around that they only need to make 4 extra links in varying lengths ie 5mm 6mm 7mm 8mm & a 9mm one would do the trick to get perfect fit.

Do you know if the gold-colored center links are constructed the same/similar way?

A human hair is around 80 microns or 0.08mm.

0.05mm is 50 microns so at 60 microns this ‘plating’ is about the same thickness?

I remember seeing the detached plate in that thread and it looked much thicker than 60 microns.

Yes, some current two tone models have a clasp that is gold plated in the middle, it gives a nice contrast and adds a touch of elegance to the watch.

you said "60 microns".... google says a human hair is that thick or thicker.

its a shame the clasp is made this way which is a disappointment. Thats like having a fiberglass car spoiler with a wafer thin piece of carbon fiber on top or a bunch of other analogies of "doing it half assed". Even if its 10x the 50 or 60 microns its still less than 1mm.

The odds of the center strip falling off is minuet. The one posted in this thread is the only one I have ever seen and it was posted nearly 5 years ago. If it were an issue you would be seeing many more posts about it here on TRF. The odds of you getting in a car accident are much more likely than the gold strip falling off but I bet you still drive.

This one off incident shouldn't deter you from getting a TT watch. And there is no reason for Rolex to get rid of the current clasp as it simply isn't an issue and offers fine adjustments that the DD bracelet does not.

I could be mistaken, but I don't believe Rolex does gold plating anymore on the center strip of the clasp. It's solid gold and then adhered to the SS part of the clasp.

Interesting! Thanks for the insight. Are steel center links on modern oyster bracelets also pressed into form like that, or are they solid all the way through?

Yes - on modern clasps the 18k gold strip is 0.6mm - there must have been a confusion in some of the earlier discourse.

Since there are 1000 microns in a mm, the gold strip is more like 600 microns, not 60.

60um would be way too thin to be fixed to a stainless steel clasp.

I read that it was approx 0.8mm but 0.6 mm would be workable.

On newer Rolex bracelets, they are solid gold now (see pic below) and not pressed into forms as shown above. Not sure what year they changed to the solid gold construction.
