Cruising with your rolex
Did anyone ever get stopped by customs departing a cruise ? Were you hasseled over whether you bought it on visiting island or hit with duty taxes?
A little concern since I was thinking of wearing my Rolex on my cruise, bought it from someone on TRF so I don't have a reciept. |

I've never had any questions at all on cruise vacations. It seems that I always take a couple and bring back three.....

No issues ever. I suppose if I wore it on my biceps or something along those lines they would be suspicious though...

No issues, but it has a dated inscription from a year and a half ago, so I don't think they'd have an issue. If they did, my government ID should probably lend the last bit of credibility I would need!

If you'd like to have your t's crossed and i's doted, you can alway get a notarized affidavit prior to any traveling.

Never happened to me on the cruises I have been on. Good advice though: wear a Timex or similar watch when you go on island excursions, for obvious reasons.

This was a MAJOR concern of mine when I bought my Sub back on a cruise in 2002.
I bought a Sub date at an AD in Cozumel, and (stupid me) figured to avoid paying duty/import tax before we boarded the ship, I threw out the box, wore the Sub on board the ship, and kept all the paperwork in a plastic, no-name bag. Come to find out as soon as we boarded the ship, they didn't even search our bags !!! MAN was I RIPPED !!! Threw away a brand new Rolex box for NOTHING ! Oh well, my own fault. You live and you learn ! |

Sorry, I just re-read this thread, and I think the OP meant wearing your watch ON a cruise, and not buying one while on a cruise/on the islands/etc.

The ONLY time anybody checks is US Customs when you arrive back in home port. All they check is the customs form that YOU fill out and hand them.. The only thing I have ever seen them confiscate from a Cruise passenger is food...........

I travel a lot internationally (via commercial aircraft), and always wear one (sometimes bring a 2nd Rolex on my carry on) and have never been asked or searched while arriving back into the US at the following airports - SFO, LAX, JFK, ORD, SJC, IAD, DCA, DFW.
The USCIS agents have more pressing duties - illegal drugs, passport checks, etc
