Anyone in UK purchased from DavidSW

Hi all,

My question is....has anyone purchased a Rolex from DavidSW and had it shipped to the UK and if so what was the duty and VAT implications on that purchase?

To my part of the global paradise it will be 15% VAT plus transport costs ..makes it just too expensive .

My understanding is that import duty for watches into the UK is 4.5% and that vat at 20% will be added.

I haven’t actually gone through a purchase but I was in correspondence with him through TRF over a JC DBlue I was interested in last year.

I asked him about import duties etc & he said he ships them as a repair which negates any duty.

Contact him through TRF PM’s like I did, found him to be nothing but helpful - I’m sure he’ll sort you out

Believe so - although not 100% sure. The HMRC website doesn’t make the distinction for new/used so would have to assume it is irrelevant.

VAT is 20% on new or used, the rest, duty and processing fees etc are a very negligible amount.

Agree - I didn’t go through with the deal in the end - nothing to do with David SW, like I said, found him to be nothing but helpful, just didn’t want to risk it, just in case....

dont, you will get stuck with import duties and they will also probley unpack and handle your watch...

Don't do it!!!!!
Customs will very probably open up the box and handle the watch with the possibility of damage, they will then request the 20% VAT + import tax, you would be far better to purchase the watch from within the UK.

I had an issue in Spain where my own vintage watch was sent back to me from the U.S after a repair. First they wanted duty, then they questioned the authenticity and even sent a letter to Rolex...

Rolex never replied and after around 6 weeks and plenty of written claim s the watch just arrived one day, without any tax nor further questions.

This is not a direct reply to your question. But I can’t work out why you would not buy from a UK Grey Dealer. I’m from Dublin Ireland where there are no Grey Dealers. So when I knew I was going to purchase a Rolex I looked to the UK & came across a Grey Dealer in Blackburn who was selling Watches at a very reasonable price. Just to let you know I am in no way connected to this Grey Dealer, but having purchased three Rolex’s in the past four years I can without question vouch for this Grey Dealer. When I bought my Watches I travelled from Dublin to Blackburn to pick up the Watches in person. This Grey Dealer has a Jewellery Shop in the heart of Blackburn’s City Centre. They are lovely people to deal with, both knowledgeable & professional. The name of the Grey Dealer is iconicwatches & I have had the three Watches checked out for authenticity & all have been proven genuine. If the Watch you are interested in is not an in-stock item they will source it for you, as has happened with my last purchase. I cannot praise this Company enough, though the Watches I have purchased are not the much sought after S/S Sports Model’s I have saved many thousands. This is my latest acquisition. I really love this Watch & just to clarify these Watches are the latest Model’s with all there protective stickers in place

i emailed DavidSW a couple of month's back asking the same question and they told me the final import payment on one of there watch's would be no more than £100,
i can understand how it's tempting as there prices are really good and i don't think anyone matches them for price in the UK,
I didn't buy off him in the end because of the advice off you all on TRF,
I'll just keep waiting for that call from my AD!

Wow, that sounds like proper tax evasion to me. I don't know about the UK but in Spain if you get caught not declaring the true value of an item you pay a 10% fine on top of the 21% VAT plus admin fees, with no possibility of refusing to pay by returning the merchandise back to sender.

Also, if there's a problem with the watch and DavidSW agrees to refund you, you've lost 21% if you declared its true value and 31% if not and caught, ouch in both cases...

I'd rather stick to local sellers with full refund if there's a problem.

DavidSW is a prime dealer so you’d have no problems with the watch’s authenticity or his character references.

But the scenario you asked was more about the tax burden - and I think a tangential issue is supporting your own domestic watch sellers.

If you act locally (meaning within your country’s borders) then you don’t have any concerns about import fees, customs hassles, etc. At the same time you are supporting your local dealer(s).

So I’d skip importing and look locally - or within a nice day trip’s distance...
