Icon5 Hublot Classic Fusion 42mm vs. Rolex Submariner 116610 (Resale value etc)

In about 6 months I am going to purchase an AP RO, but until then I gotta satisfy my addiction of getting a watch. However, I do not have $15k to spend right now so I am looking to spend around $5-7k.

Now thinking of either a Hublot Classic Fusion 42mm (all black) or a Rolex Submariner. Now I know I'm at a biased forum, as most people love Rolex and hate Hublot here...but I gotta ask anyway.

I think the Hublot is a nicer watch and something I would probably keep for the long haul. Especially since I'm buying a metal AP soon, the Hublot would give more variety to my collection.

My biggest concern is the resale value. The retail of this is around $7-9k, but I got a good deal of $5.5k for it. Lets say I need to sell it in 6 months to be able to justifiy my purchase of an Audermars Piguet Royal Oak, how much could I expect to lose? Will I even be able to sell it at all?

With the Rolex, while I probably won't keep it, if I buy it used now I can probably get nearly all of my money back whenever I want.

I'm torn...your thoughts?

Thanks, but I gotta have a watch pronto. I just ruined my current watch by dropping it on tile.

Part of me says buy a Submariner used now, sell it for the same price in 6 months and then buy both a AP RO and a Hublot at the same time. I might just do this.

I think you've answered your own question. If you are pretty sure you'll be selling it, the Rolex is the way to go. There is just no comparison between the market for a Sub vs the market for a Hublot. When you get your AP, you may not find yourself wearing a Hublot. I know that I wear my AP ROC a lot more than my Hublot SuperB.

If I am reading your post correctly, if you're looking for a watch to wear while you wait for your AP, you may also consider something like a Steinhart or Sinn which won't cost nearly as much and could easily serve as a "beater" or travel watch when you don't want to take your AP.

Forget the Hublot--get the Sub if those are the two choices.

wouldn't get the hublot. Why aren't you getting the RO now?

If you're getting a AP just get that and forget the Rolex and hublot.

Buy what you like the look of most, for the best possible price, and just get on with actually enjoying and making use of it.
If you need to sell it to help fund the AP, then so be it – but hopefully it’ll not come to that, and you can equally enjoy both.
It’s really no more complicated than that.

Thanks for the input guys.

I was just down at the local dealership and looked at both watches. I'm just gonna buy a used Sub now and then if I need to sell it later to fund the AP, I could do so without losing more than perhaps $500 - $1000. Besides, the Sub actually looked better this time than last time I tried it, so I think I'm actually gonna like it quite a bit.

The Hublot looked pretty amazing still though. I really like the look of it. I will probably get one later because I just like to have a watch in all black. I don't care that the brand doesn't have any history or that their watches are overpriced.

I think if you get more than 80% back for the Hublot in 6 months you did pretty well. Nice move choosing the Sub instead, though you still may be out over $500 when you flip it.

I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a "be all end all rolex fan" like so many others here but in this instance it's a no brainer - get the sub

Go for the Sub now, and once you get the AP you may find the Hublot too derivative and you might want to keep the Sub too is my guess.

It's easy when it's a hublot. The list of things you wouldn't take over it is easier to compile.

Hublot derivative of AP? Preposterous!

I love seeing a thread about a sub and Hublot, where you have resale mentioned, LOL
