Colonoscopy

Having my first colonoscopy exam this Friday. Anyone have any advice, recommendations or suggestions? Feeling a little anxious.

The anticipation is much worse than the actual procedure.

If you're getting propofol, you'll be fine. The prep the night before will suck, though.

Do it under anesthesia. In this case it will be simple and fully painless.

It's no big deal. The worst thing is the 2 days of "preparation"...

Don't they always use anesthesia? I thought that was standard procedure.

Vast majority use anesthesia, but some choose not to. A good friend had it done without, as he gets sick coming out of anesthesia. He said it wasn't that bad. I've had a biopsy done on my prostrate. Made the colonoscopy a piece of cake.

Thursday night, get yourself a good book and stay seated on the throne until all is cleared out.

The prep isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Don’t take any business phone calls afterwards, or make any important decisions. You will be loopy, for awhile.

Did my first this spring. Just adhere to your docs prep sheet verbatim and relax. It's very routine for these guys. I find calm knowing I did my part exactly as asked. When I got to the ambulatory surgery center where they do them in my network and saw how many people they turn around per day (no pun intended lol) I was much more at ease. It's an oil change.

When I was released we went straight to our lake house and I was adamant to my wife that I could drive the car no problem. She of course did not let me. Point being you may feel like you can do more than they advise. Don't.

Propofol is a wonderful thing lol

Just had my 4th Ron .. it’s the best thing you can do for yourself but yes, the prep is no fun, but make sure you follow it all the way.. it yields the best procedure

Best wishes

The prep can be less than fun but at least your at home. The procedure is the easiest part.

I always get a kick out of weighing myself when I start the prep and then again right before the procedure to see the difference.

As Kat says don't take any work calls for balance of day. You will think you are fine but actually loopy. Prep isn't much fun but propofol will take you away to never never land for about 30 minutes. It could save your life and isn't a big deal.

I have to have regular upper GI scopes for which they use what I call “no fun” anesthesia….ie the stuff that you wake right up from…. My colonoscopy though……YES!!! Nothing beats that hammered sleepy feeling you have for the rest of the day. Best naps ever. Oh and the faux argument my wife let me have with the person at chick-fil-a over whether or not I ordered orange juice for lunch but wanted lemonade was pretty solid too. Have fun!

Prep sucks.
Colonoscopy is no big deal. Be glad it's not a sigmoidoscopy. That's the one that's done in a Dr's office, not as deep, but very painful as they inflate the colon with air and push the scope up with no anesthesia. I don't know if they still do those but once you've had one you'll appreciate the nap that the colonoscopy provides.

This!!

I’ve had 2 and the only side effect is that the prep has ruined the taste of Gatorade for me for the rest of my life.

I just had one done Tuesday. Extremely routine but normal to feel anxious. The prep is the worst part but it’s not that bad - it’s not like the poops when you have the flu.

Fun story:
I once had a colonoscopy and endoscope on the same day. Joking with the Dr I asked if he used the same scope for both. He answered "Don't worry, after the colonoscopy we wipe it off.

Do the prep exactly as your physician has instructed and you will be cleaned out enough that everything can be done smoothly.
Nothing is worse than an inadequate prep.
It means that the procedure can not be completed and you’ll have to start the whole process again on another day.

Ouch!!

As others have noted, the prep is worse than the actual event. Before you go in, someone will insert an IV port into the back of your hand. That is for your sedation. What I remember after hopping up onto the examination table is, the nurse asking me to lay on my right side.

The next thing I remember is my wife helping me get dressed. Between those two, I got nothing.
