Netflix - The Social Dilemma.

I've just watched The Social Dilemma on Netflix with my wife and I'd highly recommend it. Anyone else watched?

I work in tech and while maybe a bit alarmist, it's a great wakeup call. The amount of data available to us is scary. Enjoyed watching it!

It's very interesting indeed. Glad I'm not on Facebook, Instagram etc.

I did watch it, having come from knowing a bit of the tech industry. It certainly gives you some perspective of how you interact on the internet being that alot of what you do is 'monitored'.

Just watched it last night, was the nudge I needed to delete that last bit of social media I had (Instagram). I learned a long time ago Facebook was not a positive thing in my life so I deleted it. What I’m most scared of is how I’m going to protect my young daughter. Someone mentioned 16 for a phone and social media, we are leaning that direction. It will defiantly be a privilege and highly monitored activity for my daughter when the time come. I feel bad for the times she will see grousing up. Social media is the worst!

Excellent suggestion and started watching it yet had other things to do so need to finish watchig it. It's far more than just social media of course, as right now you're being tracked, logged, etc as you surf the web. VPN matters very little to some extent.

Without a doubt the smartphone has been the best 'government spy tool' in modern times to track all that you do. There's no escape, really, unless you go 'dark'.

Always urge a bit of caution watching Netflix "docs", as I feel they should be taken no more than entertainment. They are generally super bias and try to cause as much controversy as possible. Definitely take them without a lot of salt!

Agree. The algorithm stuff is real and subliminal enough to keep you unaware of what's happening. My brother was hooked and went from an easy going college guy who loved surfing etc to someone who believes in conspiracy theories, as much as he tries to deny. Sad times and I can imagine how worrying it is for parents.

That should be standard operating procedure for any non fiction viewing.

Agree Dan. Not only the documentary itself but same applies to the subject social media and pretty much everything else. It's easier for us grown ups though. Children and idiots are the ones at more risk.

You would think that but I'm quite sure there are more people that do not do that rather than do.

Think of how dumb the average American is, then realize half of them are dumber than that -George Carlin-

Unfortunately with targeted media everyone who participates is at risk and actively being mind controlled

Agree. I try not to blame the platform though. My brother went through an ugly divorce, had trouble in his career so the change in his behaviour has more to do with his problems than social media manipulation I guess. However, his girlfriend is american and lives in Irvine. Cut from the same cloth and both believe the same modern stupidity. I'm glad he's happy and they've met years ago in social media so what can I say.

I know how that goes, my fiancé left like 4 years ago and life hasn’t been the same since for me. Spent tens of thousands on therapy, have been working a program for years and i still wake up feeling worthless most days. Just be glad he’s found some happiness after heartbreak. I’m a completely different person than I was with my ex as well, although despite the struggle I’d think most would agree I’m a much better person today.

I went through that more than 20 years ago with my last girlfriend before I met my wife. One of the worst feelings one can have. My antidote was based on four small attitudes. Waking up very early so I'd fall asleep at night easily, sports twice a day, quit recreational drugs and booze and at last I tried hard to belive it was just a phase that would pass. One year later it did and I met my wife but I never forgot those days.

I started it the other day with the wife and she literally stared at her phone for the 45min or so that it was on.

Been wanting to watch it. Listened to studies about much of this stuff years ago, and have always tried to kind of keep social media at a distance as I kinda feel overall it’s not normal or overly healthy. Especially how it’s engineered, and the ways in which these companies know how to effect you in a way to keep coming back and create an addictiveness if you will.

As supernova above had mentioned though, Netflix really goes for the shock value, and in a way do exactly what I suspect they are attempting to act as if they are speaking out against.

3 of my brothers just this week, unsubscribed from Netflix due to a certain new release they aired, but agree with above, some are very controversial

What I took away from the documentary was that google search results are tailored to your profile.....

It was good to spread awareness on this topic -- which I think many people are aware of. If you think about it, social media (instagram, TRF, etc) and the internet in general are fueling the interest / demand in watches.

If you were just going about life without looking at pics of watches (wrist porn) on the internet -- would you lust as much for some of these watches? Maybe, but probably not as much
