You agree but wasn’t Russell996’s point that ”more than sum of its parts” means visibly unfinished sides on watch hands under powerful magnification isn’t that big of a deal if the watch still feels special on the wrist? Whether said sides are unfinished because they are ”entry level” or otherwise (exit level?) is less important. At least that’s how I understood his post. Apologies if that was not the case.

Well said. I love PP and look forward to the day I can afford one, but attention to detail is everything in high end watches. Hopefully all top notch watchmakers can continue to perfect their craft as we get deeper into the smart watch future. Perfection, punctuated by slight human flaws (e.g. keeping precise time over a year), is exactly why we are still in the automatic watch world. Quote:

Although I have a pretty entry level Patek, the level of finishing is quite satisfactory to me.
I don't have any macro shots but WatchFinder did a recent video showing my 6000R up close https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKXcvOSxL4o

Yes, but things look a bit different movement side, still not bad, but not up to snuff with the grand Swiss or ALS

Very few things are up to snuff compared to ALS.

I hereby graciously offer the thread starter to get rid of his abomination of a 5164A for him, free of charge, even.

I think he'd be happy just to see the thread disappear!
In all honestly, if this watch somehow had tanked in the aftermarket and was trading for half of MSRP instead of 2x MSRP, I imagine buyers might be a little less charitable. Knowing one can always flip something for a giant profit due to a long line of eager buyers makes up for a lot of sins. It's hard to imagine in the current environment, but if one could be transported to a world where few lusted after this watch due to the unPP-like finishing, this thread might be completely different.

Absolutely, but as dial quality is sometimes comparable, it was worth mentioning that if you wat the entire watch to measure up, you’ll end up in the same pricerange with a Credor

Yup. Some GS stans make it seem like “finishing” == polish of the hands. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I‘m kidding of course on the last point, I like many Vacherons and Pateks just as much as the engraved balance cocks of our northern neighbors.

Already doubled your money on the 5164, he can go secondary with Lange and lose little to none or can buy lumen or Odysseus and make money. Of course, if making money is your / his objective Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This ignores the unwritten rule at the AD: they don't hand you the steel until you've taken a few baths in precious metals pool.
If you want the steel, look down at what's sitting in the case, and start pointing and charging. Good pieces go to good customers and good customers are profitable. |

This is the most ridiculous comment i have ever read to justify poor quality. Patek entry level watches are 30k presumably because of the quality and not just name. Sounds like patek is milking the fans for its name if above is actually true. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

The guy in the other thread with the smudged hands and microscratches on a supposedly new 5170 got a full refund. Anyone in their right minds think that the TS here would get a refund for having visibly unfinished hands under 20x magnification? Or that said oversight is actually unintended? Not a chance, imo. |

this thread reminded me of when i was considering an aston martin vantage a few years ago. I noticed the stitching on the dashboard wasn't straight and looked misaligned. the dealer said "Well sir as you must know the interior is entirely finished by hand and the imperfections are part of the charm." so i bought a porsche instead.

This is a screwed up world where we are expected to kiss the ass of the AD ... not unique to PP (see Rolex and AP), but still screwed up.
