Patek 5196R or Lange Saxonia

Hi all

Looking for a dress watch now and have narrowed it down to a Patek 5196R or Lange Saxonia (in rose gold as well)

What would you choose and why?

Thanks

I would go with a Lange but not the saxonia. The dial doesn't look very appealing in my opinion, but if you take a look at the 1815, Lange 1 or Richard Lange.

Hi Danny,

In the absence of pix the Patek 5196R sounds better.

Bit like Ducati 1098R sounds better than Yamaha Fizzer.

The Lange looks more elegant. But it is a very close call!

Of those models Id go with the Lange, I am a bigger fan of Patek but the Patek Id suggest would start in the upper 30's

Patek ... I've particularly always loved the dauphine hands on that model.

Patek approx 14.9 USD in RG
Lange approx 15.9 USD in RG

Lange being the more pricier one of the two

How do Lange's hold value in comparison to Patek?

I guess the other thing is that a Patek is the pinnacle of watches

My mistake!

Patek 5196R is 19.4k
Lange Saxonia is 15.9k

So Patek is the pricier of the two

It depends on the model, and the length of time you're willing to hold it.

I like the Patek better, the crown is to big on the Lange. The Germans always say, form follows function, easier to wind.

I just found a place on line that has the Patek at $14,550.00 New.

I would go with the PP, but the Lange is good, too.

Go for the Patek. I absolutely love the dial, it is probably my favorite dial ever.

The 5196R is my preferred choice between your two options.
Though please bear in mind, that the Patek does not come with a sapphire case back as does the Lange. Both are quite small in diameter and height.

Regarding value (something that is not usually discussed) on a whole a Patek will hold it's value longer then most other brands, but to be able to recoup your original expense, then you must be prepared to hold on to it for 10 years or more.
Also worth noting is that these two (although not reflected in the cost) are the basic dress watches, so their prices are not going to rocket in value. But that said they are both beautifully crafted pieces.

If it was my money, and has already been mentioned, I would up my choice to say either a Patek 5127 or 5107. And in the Lange & Sohne range I would be looking at the Saxonia Automatic, 1815 or the Richard Lange (Which is renowed for it's accuracy) and finally Lange are only one of very few manufacture's who assemble their pieces, then take them apart before re-assembling.

Please let us know what you finally decide?

Regards
Tony

Thanks Tony, very helpful!

Looking at it, I think I am now thinking of the auto 5296R, or even the more classic manual 5119R

You gotta start looking at 5396 or 5135.
I really like the 5135.

Of the two, I'd choose the Patek.

As mentioned, only the Lange has a display back showing its beautiful movement.
The Patek 215 caliber is so small (will fit a 33mm case) it might look rediculous with a sapphire case back in a 37mm watch.

Try to get a 25-30% discount on the Patek.

I didn't notice, but if you're in the states I know two Patek AD's who might give that discount.

PS: Have you seen a Patek 5127 in rose? Or a Richard Lange (that would be my choice)?
