Patek Phillipe 5196R or A Longe 1815?
I am considering purchasing either a Patek Phillipe 5196r manual or an A Longe Sohne 1815 in rose gold. They are both beautiful watches, but does anyone have a reason why one is better than the other? Does the Patek hold its value better than A Longe Sohne?
Your help is appreciated, DSB |

Thanks. Is there any reason that you prefer Patek?

Patek holds its value better then Lange.
The Lange however looks nicer. Do you have a particular preference for those brands or would more competitively priced Jaeger Lecoultre or Glashutte Original suffice? |

A Patek will hold its value better than Lange in most cases.

Probably best to decide what you are buying it for. The A Lange definitely looks better, IMO, but the Patek would probably re-sell faster and at closer to it's original price, should the need arise.
Couple of random images picked up off the web.

Buy the watch which you like to wear dont stress on the value, both the brands have history , study and do your research. Mechanically both the brands are top notch.

Both are fabulous watches. I prefer the look of the Lange though. As others have mentioned the Patek will hold its value better.

Patek probably holds its value better but Lange has a much higher quality finish to the watch, most notably the movement. Personally I'd check out some other options with Lange rather than the plain 'ol 1815 (beautiful, to be sure), but they are known for doing other things really well such as the large date windows...
I love the Patek w/o the crown guards of the 5127 - e.g., in that pic above. Even without the date window, that Lange is just stunning!

The watch is a gift from my wife and these are essentially my two options. I like the Patek because it is classic and a true dress watch. I think due to the size of the ALS it seems a little more "sporty" and I already own an Omega Seamaster GMT. I do love the look of the 1815. I also like the fact that Patek is family owned and consistently regarded as first rate year after year. I dont plan on reselling the watch, but if for some reason I decided in ten years that I wanted an ALS, I could likely trade in a PP for an ALS.

i am not a huge fan of Pateks, however i love just about all the A.Langes they make, simply stunning watches, i truely believe that they are the Best dress watches Money can buy.
however you have to try both on to make a 100% informed desicion because at the end of the day all of us here aren't wearing it, you are. PS if its a gift from your wife ( birthday, anniversary ect) its definatly not recommended to 'trade it in' in a few years if you change your mind. best of luck and cant wait to see pics.

You need to look at them both
They are quite different watches when you have them in your hands. I was set on the 1815 until I tried one on.
The Patek is in my opinion the perfect size. The 5196R is simply stunning and the brushed and polished parts of the case really set each other off beautifully. The Patek is also very thin. The Lange has a display back which the patek does not have but the lange 3/4 plate hides almost everything so you're not really losing that much. The Lange is heavier and more substantial, the Patek is lighter and more elegant. My choice out of the two would be for the patek 5196R. Here's a picture of my 5296 to get you thinking.

My feeling is that the A Lange is a bit too big to be a classic dress watch (looks more sporty) and that the fad of large watches will pass over time. I think that the PP will hold up better style-wise over time. Does anyone agree/disagree?

Lange are a bit chunky (dial size isn't large though, it's right in line around 38mm usually), so you may have a point there. After all, Patek has lasted this long without resisting watch fads (larger, thicker cases, etc.)

I prefer the Patek 5196 (Aesthetic wise and rose gold) This is coming from a HARDCORE A.Lange fan. If you was debating on the WG 1815/Calatrava, I might sway my vote towards the 1815.

Does anyone know whether you can put a deployment clasp on a PP Calatrava? Would that ruin the aesthetic of the watch? I was thinking of something similar to this Cartier.

I think the 5196 is my ideal Patek. No date, and small seconds at 6pm. Not a fan of the 5127's crown guards.

I tried on a similar Jaeger and thought that it was too large. I also have been told that the craftsmanship is not in the same league as PP and ALS. To be hones, I dont know much about Glashutte.

ALS makes hands-down THE most beautiful watches inside (mechanism) and out. And since it's a gift from your wife (forget about ever trading or selling), chosing ALS is the way to go.
