Which Travel Time

Hi guys, I'd appreciate your advice on this one:

Shall I start with a 5164a, or go straight to the 5990?

Here's a bit of background info about me and my preferences:
  1. I travel a lot and will probably be using the watch as my daily
  2. I have a 6.5" wrist, and would prefer a comfortable watch
  3. I do worry sometimes about safety, so I prefer having something discrete

Other watches in my stable are a few SS Rolex, and a 5396g. I also plan on adding a 15202st if I take the 5164a route.

Thanks for your advice!

sounds like the 5164 would be ideal

The 5164 seems to favor each of your three considerations - so, unless you prefer the 5990 there is your answer

I'd go 5990 if the wait times isn't too bad.

If you can, try the watches on before making a purchase decision. The 5990 is quite a bit thicker on the wrist than the 5164. If you are used to a hefty watch like a Sub, then the 5990 would be fine. But if you are used to a slimmer watch like the Daytona, then the 5164 may be better.

You should be able to try them on at the Geneva Salon.

I think the 40mm 5990 will fit better on your 6.5" wrist instead of the 41mm 5164.

5990 is indeed thicker, but the nautilus chassis can accommodate the thickness easily. It has a different presence but a good one nonetheless.

One thing I would like to note for people with smaller wrists, the 5164 strap can be rather inflexible at the lugs and the strap ends up "bowing" out. This was far more noticeable on the 5164 than the 5167 which has a thinner strap. For me at least, I found the 5990 an even better fit because the bracelet at the lugs bends down nicely and wraps around the wrist.

Aside from that, I think the 5164 is a great daily wear watch. On rubber it is very discreet, and it pairs well with almost everything from shorts and flip-flops to a full suit. Whereas for the 5990, there's a lot more scratchable surface area and the piece is a bit flashier with the PCLs (though still discreet in comparison to almost any Rolex). I am hesitant to use the 5990 as a full-on daily because I'm scared of scratching it, but you can bet that I will wear it with almost anything.

In terms of comfort I'm tempted to say the 5990 is even more comfortable than the 5164 for me, as that bracelet just drapes around the wrist like silk, and the inside of the clasp is thinner and has less chance of digging into my wrist as the summer heat approaches.

I am biased towards the 5164, and I would explore if I can add a 5167 bracelet on it.

I’m in the middle of finding out about this myself.

Based on your situation 5164 sounds right.

Does anyone have an issue with accidentally hitting the hour adjustment buttons on the left side of the watches?

Anyway, I think the 5164 may be more discreet than the 5990 due to its smaller case thickness and lack of a shiny metal bracelet.

Unless it doesn't fit you wrist right, go for the 599o.

If you’re wanting first and foremost the best possible travel watch then I don’t believe there is a better watch than the 5164.

If you want the nicest watch of the two, with the added bonus that it has a travel time function I’d go with the 5990.

IMO the 5164 is ready for a small update when comparing to the new 5968. (Bezel, hour markers and numerals - to my eyes anyway). Nonetheless still a beautiful watch.

I am right now on a longer business trip to South America wearing my 5164 all day(s) long , even in the gim. It is really a very versatile watch and you would not need another one for any larger business trip. I would not be comfortable bringing 5990 (which I do not own) to this trip as the only watch.

Having said all of this, 5990 is a very nice watch and I would own it with a great pleasure. So my conclusion, if you go with your 3 preferences, 5164 is the one to have. If you want to consider general look and feel aspects, 5990 might be a more exciting choice.

Let your heart decide

i agree with this. The 5990 is more versatile in all situations but the 64 is a better pure travel watch.

I think if someone wants to mug or steal your watch, they probably don’t know what a PP is but just want your valuables not just the watch but your wallet too.

Do you think it makes a difference on a bracelet or a rubber which may seem cheaper. Also if you want a 5990, you may end up buying it after the 5164.

What safety concerns do other members have in general if going to a new area with a PP which is not that recognizable?

This makes it for me for sure, and I love the 5164 dial more than the 5990's with my bugbear the PP logo at the bottom of the dial, but if you don't have a Nautilus on bracelet I understand that temptation.

5990 is a great watch and I wear it often and find it quite comfortable. However it is not very discrete and if you want a discrete travel watch it would be the 5164A. I wear a 5167A when I'm working in the prison and no one had ever commented on it. Before that I used to wear an Explorer I and it attracted quite a few comments from inmates.

A 5990 and 15202 combo would be splendid and a true killer pair.

Though I say that probably because I'm biased. Sold my 5164 to get a 5990 and zero regrets so far.

I think this maybe a myth....I’ve seen it on a YouTube video by a grey dealer and tried to replicate it on my 5990 and couldn’t.

So it’s definitely not an issue unless you can fold your wrist backwards...

For more sporty I would want the 5164. If the classic nautilus look is what your craving jump on the 90
