Another DSSD Post: Back from vacation!

Just got back from Spring Break Vacation with the family. I took out my DSSD for the first time for it's intended use, i.e., diving. A couple of comments while the thoughts are fresh in my head:

1) The deep sea is an excellent vacation watch. It's robust, comfortable to wear, particularly because you can adjust it, and it is unmistakably a ROLEX. I walked into a local AD and the saleperson commented she could tell as soon as I walked in what I was wearing. While I doubt anybody else on the resort would have noticed, I have to confess that I felt a sense of privilege having one on.

2) The deep sea is superior to the other models for general scuba diving. I went out a few times, no more than 50 ft, and I was very comfortable adjusting it and reading the bottom time. The single greatest advantage was the tick marks all the way around the bezel. After 35 minutes, the dive instructor had us do a 3 minute safety stop and I could time this accurately without re-zeroing the bezel. Maybe someone out there can enlighten me why Rolex didn't do this in the first place with all the other models where the tick marks stop after 15 minutes.

3) My kids keep turning the bezel whenever they get at my hand. Granted they are only 4 but I suspect they'll get tired of doing this long before they cause any damage.

4) I've noticed the many recent comments about the size of the DSSD. I know it is very much an individual taste and you have to get accustomed to it, but there are frankly much bigger watches out there. In Jamaica, both residents and tourists wore some real monstrosities so I hardly think size is an issue. Incidentally, I'm 5'6" and about 165lbs.

5) Finally, it works perfectly fine in a hot tub.

Nice review. I've only seen one in an AD and it was a handsome beast. I guess if I was a diver I might consider one, but watches that size and thickness look awkward and way too big on my wrist. On the right wrist it's a beauty, though!

I have to say, you have some stones to take a DSSD to Jamaica. I have only spent a night there once when we missed our flight, but I was nervous about having a high-end watch, especially at night

I think the DSSD is a good size for a diving piece. I have had various Oris divers in the past, ranging from 44 - 47mm, and with plenty of polish on the bracelets too.

I wondered the same thing over and over again. I reckon that when the 15 minute graduations were introduced in the late 50's early 60's that the science of diving wasn't as advanced and the usefullnes of a fully graduated bezel didn't exist. Why Rolex didn't change this when the Royal Navy requested it I can only wonder

I think they did... this is a Mil Sub from 1975...

They did indeed Psmith but why didn't they realise the utility of this and make it available on civilian versions ?

Oh, apologies, I misunderstood your post. Yes, I agree - having minute marks all the way around the bezel would make more sense. Oris have switched to this on their divers in the last year or too - better late than never
