Icon2 Dealer baiting me?

I cold called a dealer in my area today telling them I’m looking for a 114060 or a 116610LV. He did meantion that they didn’t have any stainless watches I in stock at the moment He was very receptive to the idea of me calling about a sub and seemed hopeful of filling the order quickly, a much different vibe on the phone than other dealers when I’ve called inquiring about those pieces. He said they were getting a shipment tomorrow or Friday and will call me and let me know if there’s something in the shipment that will satisfy my inquiry.

He called me back 15 mins later asking if I was interested in a black GMT that he found in the back.

Is he fishing for me to buy the GMT in order for what I’m looking for to magically appear, or is he hoping I settle for something similar to what I’m looking for?

I have to be honest, my intuition was buzzing after our first phone call. It seemed as though the sub(s) I’m looking for could become a reality soon. The second phone call kind of threw me through a loop.

Thoughts?

Unfortunately there is no way to know for certain if the AD has ulterior motives. If it was me I would just go to the shop and have a transparent conversation with the dealer and lay my cards on the table and ask him to do the same.
What I wouldn't do is buy awatch that I didn't really want in order to maybe get the chance at purchasing what I really desired!
Keep us updated as to that happens! Good luck

My thought is your dealer is a master baiter.

Why buy a watch that you don't want? There a cheaper alternatives for that eg. DW

Dont think that he is baiting, but rather trying to make a sale

Over thinking it. Maybe he just wanted to know if you had considered a GMT? Or would like to see one?

Buy it, but don't wear it until you see if the others arrive so you can return it if needed. Be warned, you may like it.

I wasn’t considering buying the GMT! I agree with your point though

I think they’re simply trying to sell you a VERY similar looking watch. Period.

no one is going to bundle a SS GMTII with a sub or use it as leverage. Makes no sense.

Ultimately, buy the watch you really want. No one can bait me into something I don't want regardless of tactics. If you just want to buy anything available, then there's not much baiting in that, he's just telling you what's in stock and you'll bite.

I would think an AD calling with offer of black GMT is looking out for you.

He's just trying to help out, given the constraints he has - i.e. very few stainless steel sports models. I read it as good intentions on his part.

Doubt he’s baiting you. ADs who bundle SS sports models are going to want you to buy some slower-moving, higher-priced inventory like PMs or TT DJs, not another SS sports model.

He is trying to make a fast sale with product he’s already got in stock.

If I didn’t already have a BLNR I would probably take him up on it!

I agree. I haven’t seen a black Steel GMT in ages either.
Maybe they should just take over the retail segment and put 30 boutiques in 30 major markets and call it a day. Everyone pays MSRP and they get what they get. Of course the Omega boutique plays games with the LEs, so maybe nothing would change. Though I really think they were just trying to limit profiteering from flippers and grey market buyers.

A good friend of mine went to buy a black submariner, walked out with a black GMT - and was none the wiser.

When I told him, he could not have cared less - was pumped to have a "really cool watch" that is nearly identical to the Sub with an extra hand.

In short, I think they were looking out for you - or at least giving you the option as quite a few people don't really know the difference between the two watches.

They don't bait you with SS GMTs. They do it with two tones and full PMs.

He probably legitimately had the GMT in the back, but most likely he doesn't have many people on the basic Submariner list. There's no reason to turn a customer away for a watch like that. It's not like you asked for a Daytona.

Personally I'd buy a black GMT over a date Sub every single time (there's a case to be made for the no date Sub if you don't like a cyclops). You're getting a lot more for your money with the GMT.

That's an exceptionally appropriate .gif, and he's even wearing a Daytona.

Seems to me the AD is just being nice and offering you a very similar looking watch almost most people wouldn’t notice the difference between. Unless the AD is a 3 hour drive away, I’d go and take a look and strike up a conversation with the AD. You have nothing to lose other than time and gas money. It’s not like GMT LN are difficult to move. Seems he’s doing you a favor.
