Daytona. Rolex' Sweet Spot?
After years of collecting Rolex, got my first Daytona 116503. So here's my story:
Started off this hobby around 7 years ago with the Explorer I, Explorer II, GMT Master, Submariner, Sea Dweller 40, 43, Datejust and Day Date recently. I've never liked or interested in the Daytonas because of the no date and busy-looking dial....until now. Having thought about my 'almost' complete collections, I felt somehow there's still something missing, so finally pulled the trigger on this 116503. I don't usually review / conclude if I really like the watches I purchased in less than 30 days wrist time because the first 7-14 days are usually still the 'honeymoon' period. Now since I've been using it for more than 30 days, I can conclude that the honeymoon is over and you either love or hate the watch, in my case I'm loving it. Now why I'm loving it: It wears damn nice ergonomically. The case: size and thickness are just of the right measurement. Not too big but give you enough presence. The lugs: length, angle and shape wears really really comfortable. They hug your wrist perfectly and sort of follow your wrist's contour The look: Sporty yet elegant, understated yet Uber stylish. Versatility is the keyword. I now understand why Daytona is so popular. It's the goldilock of comfort and style. I can now call myself a 'Daytona-convert', if there's such word. Of course it's all my opinion and after getting enough wrist time, I'm sharing how I feel. Any of you share the same experience? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I share your view that it's a very comfortable watch on the wrist.
Also, I've always thought the TT Daytona was one of the best buys in the Rolex lineup as it used to sell at a discount to MSRP at ADs (not sure if that's still the case now though). And yes, I'm a "Daytona convert'' like you! |

Spot on singslinger, as I'm just dipping my toe on the Daytona pond, there's no way I'm paying the premium of the SS. I'm gonna be screwed if after wearing it for 30 days and didn't like it. So got this around 30% cheaper from the then available SS at my AD and thought why not give it a try. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

100% agree with you. In fact Daytona was the watch that brought me to whole watch collecting addiction. In fact I am thinking of selling everything I have and focus on just collecting Daytonas

Hahahaha. You, my friend is one courageous hard-core Daytona-convert. I still use my other Rolex watches as tools. True I don't scuba dive or exploring caves but i sure do travel a lot. Been thinking about rationalizing and if I did, I'd probably still keep my GMTs and Day Date, and maybe my 116600 SD4K. Dang It's tough to choose Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Daytona is a very special timepiece!
As for the comfort wear of the Daytona, I agree entirely with you. Of all of the Rolex models that I have owened, it is the Daytona, by far that offers the maximum level of comfort with the balance & curvature of the case to be spot on. I love it! |

Congratulations.
I’m not a Daytona fan for the reasons you list in your 3rd paragraph, bu5 I do understand why it’s such a popular reference. |

Yes, I purchased a Daytona last year & I just love the look of it. It is my second Daytona in three years. I purchased the White Dial with the Gold Sub dials. I thought I was contented with this, but passing a Rolex AD I just looked in the window to see what was on display, it was there I saw the 116503 (New Model) with the White MOP 8 Diamonds Dial & just knew I had to have it. So a couple of months later I got it. I couldn’t be more happy with this Watch. Here are a couple of photos of it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have had a similar evolution with the Daytona as the OP.
Initially, I disliked it for being "too busy." Now, I celebrate it for its intricate detail and having perfect proportions. I love it on my wrist more than any other watch. |

I have a black faced 116520. I have other nice watches, too. If I were ever in a position to have to sell off my watches, the Daytona would be the last to go. It's definitely the sweet spot for me. The case size and shape are perfect. The complication is the one I find most useful. The lume is adequate. I run with it on, I shower, swim, and SCUBA with it on. It's never had a problem. I'm in my mid 40s, and I can read the time just fine on it. I wear it more than all my other watches combined.

Do you folks (Daytona owners) find yourselves actually using all of the features the watch has to offer? Just curious.

No I have never used the functions, except to let it run for a few hours from time to time just to keep the function lubricated Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Just like I never use the GMT function on my Pepsi (I can add or subtract a couple of hours in my head instantly), and never use the timer on my Sub (what good is a timer that doesn't alert). |

Getting into the hobby it was all about the subs and gmts. Never considered the Daytona mainly because it was out of my budget but naturally I was drawn towards it. It took some luck and extra cash to acquire it but it was worth every penny. Wears and looks completely different than every other sport model that looks like a sub. Very elegant yet still sporty. It’s the ultimate Rolex sports watch and I can definitely see why it’s the top dog.

The fit and symmetry is my favorite. The raised crystal is really cool too.
It’s one my best fitting watches. |

Daytona. Rolex' Sweet Spot?

Errr not really but I came to realize that most features a complicated watch has to offer have been made redundant by this thing we clutch a lot called smartphones. One exception, you can't scuba dive with it, so maybe I'd use the function of my 116600 SD4K one day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The best Rolex imho: Daytona case, gmt function, sub glide lock bracelet.
That being said my Daytona is the most confortable Rolex I own. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Daytona is a chronograph and given the history of chronograph dials, it's not that busy, but then I don't know how you can have chronograph without some "busy-ness" going on.
On all your other points, I have to agree that the Daytona is one sweet watch.

Beautiful watch! Congratulations!
I’m In agreement that they’re a beautiful, classic Rolex, but I’m actually headed in the opposite direction as far as my thoughts on a Daytona in my collection. |

I love the watch and agree it’s quite comfortable.
Just cannot get over the size. When going from any of my watches that range from 40mm-44mm, it feels like a watch smaller than a 36mm when I put it on my wrist. Trying so hard for wife to love it as I think it looks stunning on her. Congrats OP. Love the look of TT.
