It's fun and interesting question. I am not sure that unless purchased at MSRP any of this makes sense with the models you suggested in the original post. The Hulk has been in production for ten years and if we speculate it gets discontinued in 2020 then a NOS piece might be worth a premium. Daytona Zeniths are skyrocketing in price now, but prior to 2016, they sat around at fairly low prices compared to today. Basically same for the Five digit 16710 BLRO Prices shot up after 2016. The current GMT's BLNR or BLRO are still in production difficult to guess their future worth. Also too many sellers have entered now than before, which indicates product is available. You have to buy before everyone gets there looking for the same piece. At the present time I look at pieces that have a celebrity connection and are unique in the catalog. This is what happened with the jeweled Rainbow Daytona variations. My.02.

I Decided to do the same thing few years ago and picked a Black Bay Rose & Smile Dial 79220 Black on leather Starp ,when i knew it was a Very Short Run , less than six months production , and it is a safe queen since ..
Time will say if it was a smart idea😉

Like i said I like the idea. Many of us collect things new never to be used just because ! Look at coin collectors for the classic example .

So AD called me today with a Hulk that I may get. Also looking at a SDK 4000. This wont be an “ investment” just want to collect a NOS watch.

From a collector standpoint the SDK4000 will be harder to acquire in that condition as there are a lot less out there...so if you can get one now you will save alotta money compared if you decide you want one in the future....so get the out of production modern ones out of the way now.

If you’re gonna just leave it in a safe ubtil you die, why are you paying MSRP? What’s your hurry? Get on a list at your AD and pay MSRP -who cares if it takes a year to get if it’s gonna sit in a safe for a few decades... that way you know it’s genuine, unworn, and has your name on the warranty card which your kids will appreciate when you’re gone.

Something to consider: most people today keep their watch's books, papers, boxes, etc etc...

...in the future, there will be thousands of today's modern stainless steel watches freely available for sale. They won't be a rarity.

So why bother throwing one in the safe? What for?

A wiser thing to do would be to dig up a safe queen from the 70s/80s and buy that one.

Oil will dry up but it wouldn’t have a huge effect on the movement if stored in normal conditions. You would need to have the watch serviced but it wouldn’t add wear to the movement. It would likely even run fairly well but i remember reading the shelf life for modern lubricants was 10 years. After that they lose their ability to lubricator properly.

People buy two pairs of shoes all the time. One to wear and one to store. So buying a Rolex to stick in a safe isn’t that strange. It’s obviously more expensive than a pair of Jordan’s but it’s a similar idea. Personally i would get the Daytona!

In the gun collecting world - "safe queens" are really popular. I don't see the same appeal for something you can wear and use in anywhere in public - no matter the country/city/town... buy a gold bar.

I think stainless daytona. You might come out further ahead in the future. Shoot buy it toss in in safe and wear it every once in awhile. Or get a rubber b or Everest band to protect the stainless band if you truly plan on trying to keep it as new as possible. Next in line I would say hulk. I just don’t see a ton of incomings lately and prices keep going up. I have watched them go up almost 5k with some dealers in a year

I like the SD4K idea. It’s a great watch and I think it might be the shortest modern production Rolex.

The Hulk is just a fad - but that would be a good one too as I think It’ll eventually be discontinued.

I have a NOS by accident.

Received a NIB (as a gift,) black dial [new in 2019] Milgauss, all factory stickers in place, boxes, sleeve, bezel protector, tags and all papers, etc. A Full Set so to speak.

(It obviously had to have come from a gray as AD's would not have sold it in this configuration.)

I did not really want it, so it resides in the very back of the safe with a letter stating what is is and if not desired to be worn, keep it for many years and then sell it as a NOS/NIB item as a valued and unusual-condition collector's item.

It will go to a particular heir, and it is up to them what to do with it.

I guess it’s a way to diversify, but unless you get really lucky, I would think there are better places to park your money in appreciable assets, just my opinion.

I'm still confused on your point in doing this if it's not for investment purposes? Keeping an expensive item and not using it, for nothing?

I would say get the hulk since you just want it for display, its a very popular watch.

I would agree, second choice would be the SD43 Anniversary for myself.

Will be interesting to hear which watch you finally settle on putting away.

This is completely speculative aka gambling. Buy watches you will wear and enjoy, this way whether the market moves in your favor or against, you win!

Neither. Historically, you should gather those that no one wants today, they will be most worthy later.

That's like 12years in the safe. Does it require servicing and relubricating the movement?

Best to make such choice on your own..But if I were to give you a suggestion, I'd say you should go for the Daytona in between. Always a great choice anytime..

This advice is good. Also consider a popular four digit like the 1680, 1675 or 1665 with box and papers in good condition - paying that premium makes much more sense than paying the premium on the 6 digit sports.
